I can fly a Robinson R22 piston chopper for only $229

Yep so I just found a place online that will give me a 30 minute lesson on the ground about it and then I can fly it in the air with an instructor and if I pay extra I will have a longer time to fly it in the air, paying the extra amount makes it $229 plus tax. I am going to have to do this just like that kid I posted about in another entry. I am ( Read more... )

helicopters are pretty cool, i thought that you'd need a pilot's license but apparently you dont for that. ~Loader

That sounds very exciting!
Did you do a Google search for "ohio helicopter rides" or "ohio helicopter lessons"? You might find something in your area.

Yeah I did that and see some rides that I could probably get in Cleveland but I would be much more interested in flying one, even if it was just a piston one because they are more basic and what you would have to start out on. I could pay to ride in a fancy industrial jet powered one though. I like the idea of flying one though with an instructor, that's just something that sounds really cool.

Well you're on step closer to fulfilling a dream Robby and that's awesome -huggles- hope you make it there soon, I just want to travel in one someday but you're going to pilot one :)

I have had friends who flew helicopters for a living and when I asked one about all the motions involved, he compared it to patting your head, rubbing your belly, while standing atop a beach ball.

I think the guys and gals who fly them are the most talented pilots out there.

I believe it with all of the things that the pilots have to be paying attention to and all, the angle of attack on the rotors and then the swash plate angle and also the angle of attack on the tail rotors a fenestron rotors in the back on the fancy models amongst your speed and altitude and I'm sure many more things then just that all at the same time. It would definitely take talent. I also heard that as long as you are a good ways up in the air and not real close to the ground that if the engine stops that you can land smoothly and sometimes even take off again a little bit if it isn't windy if you are a good enough pilot because of the momentum of the rotors as the helicopter descends. I don't know about how it could be kept from going into a spin though, maybe the tail rotor can be powered by momentum from the main rotors in an even like that. A pilot on an airplane that I sat next to was telling me about that, he was a passenger on a flight I was on once on United Airlines.

I like that comparison, it definitely makes sense.
