A little discussion of artistic license

Aug 09, 2005 13:18

Ever since book six, it seems people have become obsessed with all art and stories being in canon. I have been told repeatedly lately my art does "not look like Harry", and my stories are not how he would act. Well, sit down, and let me introduce you to two lovely little words; artistic license. See, sometimes there are these people who have their ( Read more... )

Yeah, yeah! I totally agree! That's why I love fanon. And it's so much fun to see different versions of the same character cos that's where you actually realise how differently you think from other artists.
That ought to be the most fun thing ;)

Exactly! I'm glad not everyone's gone crazy, I was beginning to wonder. Thank you, I feel better now having had my thoughts confirmed ^-^

A slight rant! Oh my! prissyscilla August 9 2005, 17:42:43 UTC
AAAAH MY SENTIMENTS EXACTLY M'DEAR. :O

It's ever-so-slightly annoying, all these people wailing and moaning about how Sirius/Remus has gone to the sharks, along with Harry/Hermione and all these other ships, when in reality they weren't really there to begin with. I mean, you don't see Harry/Draco shippers bemoaning Harry's apparent interest in Ginny (too much XD). Imagination is the best solution for unsatisfactory pairings. <3

And as for saying your art doesn't look like Harry, DUDE. Perhaps he doesn't look like Daniel Radcliffe. Daniel Radcliffe only=Harry for about two hours. Nobody's seen BOOK Harry, so draw away! I like your art exactly how it is thank you very much.

Thank you! *hugs* That last bit is exactly what I told all those annoying people that have been harassing my art. I'm like, "excuse me, you mean it doesn't look like your version of Harry. I don't usually like to rant on here, but it's just been ridiculous! If one more person tells me I can't draw/write Harry or Draco or anyone else the way that I am, I may well explode. These people are just taking it WAY too seriously! Fanon is supposed to be fun!

There are many things about canon I don't like (like this: REMUS IS STRAIGHT! *cries*), so fanon - WHEN IT'S WELL DONE - is a nice change. I actually couldn't sleep after reading HBP until I wrote a nice Snarry where Severus explains himself (it was kinda TRAUMATIC, you know, my favorite character killing HP's version of Gandalf . . . ).

One thing though dear: "Radcliffe" has an E on the end, and no amount of artistic license in the world changes that ^_^

I confess to not really being "in the know" about actors. I still don't even have to names of the main actors down; it's just not my thing. Also, I was rather irate when I wrote this. Thanks for the correction.

I just feel like people need to get it straight that canon and fanon are two different worlds, and people who don't enjoy fanon should not read/look at it and then get annoyed about it being different.

To canon is to be deprived.

To fanon is to be loved.

OMG. I SO TOTALLY HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE DO THAT!! I write Drarry and Snarry, and in both of those pairings, I've had reviews where people say "Sorry, but this couldn't really happen." WELL NO SHIT, SHERLOCK! HOW ON EARTH DID YOU FIGURE THAT OUT? God, people are so smart these days. I DO in fact realize that Snape would never fuck Harry's brains out, but IT HAPPENS TO BE A VERY NICE IMAGE TO ME, SO I'M GOING TO WRITE ABOUT IT! And I know that Lucius doesn't beat Draco, but IT IS A MAIN PLOT POINT IN MOST OF MY FICS BECAUSE I SAY IT CAN BE! C'mon, losers. I'm an artist and a writer. I happen to be creative, and I don't need canon dictating what I can and can't write.
Hon-est-ly.
Lol....sorry, I had to rant. I love to rant. But I'm done now.

It's okay, rant away, deary. I know exactly what you mean. It's like, how do you point out the obvious to these people? Sometimes I wish I could just show them exactly how stupid they sound, saying things like that. I mean, how do you go to a HP crossdressing community, and then complain about Harry looking too much like a woman, and saying he "doesn't look like Harry"? Helloooo. If you're looking for an accurate portrayal of Harry Potter, a crossdressing community is NOT the place to look. People have just gotten SO stupid it actually hurts.

I know! And not only does it hurt your brain and cause you to lose braincells, but it makes your SOUL hurt! My soul is damaged enough from beta-ing my friend's fics; I don't need any more pieces of it to fall off!
