Their mornings started with Aoi’s voice saying out Uruha’s name in a soft, hushed tone, but enough to make the latter stir, slowly open his eyes to adjust to the light just seeping through the curtains, and smile. Even if there was a long and tiresome day waiting for them, these moments were the ones that they didn’t want to pass by quickly.

Both would get up, but Aoi was always the first one to get ready, get dressed, and leave. Uruha, on the other hand, was always the one to laze around and comfortably sit on the couch. He simply watches as the older man furrow his brows in concentration while he fixed his things, but in the process, would not forget to look up for a moment and send Uruha a warm smile. The blond would always smile at that too. The kind, thoughtful smiles they sent always made up for the times when they pretend not to know each other.

It was most certainly sad. Real life was always cruel, and how they wished the moments in which the fans think that they’re being given favor could last a little longer (Uruha could never hide a chuckle whenever the band used the word ‘fanservice’). Aoi was still the same person once he steps out of his secret apartment - shy around others, self-centered when left to his own devices - but pretends not to notice anybody, most specially not the other guitarist. The reason behind that was the very same reason why Uruha had always come late to every single band practice that they had; the tardy behaviour starting not too long ago.

Both knew what they had between them wasn’t right at all. It was hard hiding from their band mates, it was hard sneaking from the neighbors, and it was even harder to fool themselves each god forsaken day that nothing at all was going on - just business, maybe a dash of friendship, and nothing else. And yet they couldn’t help themselves; once the lights of the studios were off and the trains start to fill up with faces they’d never know and never care to know, the feeling of longing would be back, no doubt stronger than ever.

Meaningful, clandestine glimpses were still thrown over their shoulders as they stayed in the studio, giving the other guys something to be suspicious about during practice. Even if they were doing nothing wrong - nothing indecent or lewd at all - there was still this feeling of wanting to get caught. But in fear of truly getting caught, they kept that to a minimum. Sometimes they thought what they had should only stay between the two of them. Maybe it really wasn’t the fear of being looked down upon was the case here; maybe they simply wanted to be left in their own little world, their little piece of heaven.

Maybe it wasn’t so bad after all.

One day after Kai announced a cigarette break (he never usually did that; perhaps the poor guy was just exhausted himself?), Aoi decided to just utilize that time to really have a cigarette break instead of being his usual self, burying his face into the piles of songs he’d written down and drowning himself with the unamplified sound of his electric guitar. As he reached the end of the hallway, the blinding afternoon light greeted his eyes, and as a reflex he put a hand over them. Upon stepping out to the balcony, a familiar smell surfaced, making him scrunch his nose.

It wasn’t cigarette smoke as he’d normally expect. It was the whiff of Uruha’s perfume.

“Hey there Aoi.” Uruha beamed brightly, waving his hand in a friendly gesture.

Aoi smiled back with that smile that held meaning only for the two of them. He’d already forgotten what he came here for, and instead just stood beside the younger man, leaning against the metal railings as he did.

Pointing towards the skies, the blond continued, “Look at those clouds.” And of course, Aoi did as he was told; the kind, thoughtful smile never leaving his face.

Someday, the both of them mused, they’d reach what really lies beyond that vast blue and white together.
