How is it that we can open up to people we have just met, but have a struggle opening to those we have known since forever? How do we come about these cosmic connections with people?

That is all I can think of for now.

It's because of expectation. People you've first met have no expectations of you, or at least, very few. You are free to be whomever you want to be. including yourself. Around old friends, they think of you as a certain person, and they will treat you the way they think you are. It's hard to go against their expectations sometimes. And so we just keep being who they think we are, instead of who we want to be, because it's easier.

On a side note, I love your questions, they let me exercise my philosophic muscles on something more practical than theoretical. :)
