Are you using professional b&w film (it's better than changing it on the computer or on your camera)? That helps a lot with finding a greater range of lights and darks. Changing the f-stop / shutter speed will also, with this film, add interesting effects that come straight onto the film itself, without the use of pre-designed, automatic options on the camera. In my humble opinion, it looks a bit more artistic, in the end. (though I dunno if that's what you want
