Sexual Violence in Global Perspective

Aug 06, 2004 15:22

I was doing research on rape as a global issue for my zine and I just had to share these stats with people right away.

For the year 2000 Reported Rapes listed by Country: (I'm just taking the time to list the top 10 countries ( Read more... )

What percentage of the population are those? Yes there's a lot of rapes in the US, but we also have more people in our country than all of those other countries (except for India, and maybe Russia). I would bet that on a per person basis, Australia has WAY more rapes, because they only have around 20 Million people VS the US which has 220 (or so) million ( ... )

I can't get an accurate percentage of the population stat. The rape stat I have is from all sexes and ages. In 2002 though it was 1 in every 8 American women were victims to an actual rape. I wish I was better at math and had more time to spend looking up more numbers and figures but it's clear to me that America has a serious sexual violence issue and I think anyone who disagree's is an idiot.

I still stand by my alcohol theory. Russia has a very high rate of alcholism but they're culture looks at drinking completely different than ours. And come on, what else is there to do during those cold winters? But seriously, so many teenagers here get into drinking because it is something forbidden and "adult" like. And that's breeding ground for sexual violence. Children in other European countries don't view drinking the same way we do because it's so much more common and they're parents don't make a big deal out of it.

The only other figure I'd like to see is the total population of the country so that a percentage can be figured. Something like this:
Country XYZ
population 1000
male 4900
female 5100
reported rape:
male 25
female 1020
ratio: 1 in 5 females, or 20%, have reported a rape; while 1 in 196 men have.
I think that when comparing country for country percentage-wise, the real difference can be seen more accurately. That's when the impact is more dramatic.
If country ABC has twice the number of reported rapes as XYZ, but also happens to have twice the number of people, then their ratios are the same. But, if ABC has twice the number of XYZ with only half the population, then the problem is 4 times worse.

I wish I had the time and math skills to figure out more accurate stats. But I don't feel the need to because I know sexual violence is a social issue here in America. The real stat that counts in my mind is how many friends I can list off that are victims to sexual violence. It's disgusting.

That even one person has to go through that is one too many. I support capital punishment for all rapists.

It's refreshing to hear a man say that even one rape victim is too many. I don't support capital punishment for rapists. Sexual violence is deeply embedded in our culture and while I can't at all excuse the behavior, it ultimately is the fault of our culture for allowing behavior like that to go learned and unpunished. Along with all the everyday sexual exploitation we see.

The stats disturb me but I have no idea how to comment on the post. I see how violence is embedded in societies but feel helpless as to how to go about changing it. A friend of mine just returned from India telling me as much as she likes what she did there, she's angry and sick of being molested on an everyday basis. Acid-throwing and rape cases are common there as well. But hardly anyone reports and I have no idea how the authorities deal with it.

For myself I can list 10 Singaporean women I know who were sexual victims at some point of their lives. I don't think any of them reported.

What are your views on capital punishment?

I think capital punishment is too good for rapists. They deserve to be stuck somewhere crappy and miserable for the rest of their lives, and THEN die.
