More words, YAY!

Anonymous asked: What advice would you give to somebody who wants to write, but doesn't think they're good enough?

borrowing from my FAQ for this one, because i get this question a lot:

Can I tell you a secret? What you write is always worth sharing. No matter how long or small, stunted or grand, dark or shining your prose - every word you give to the world is a gift. No words are inadequate, none are less than any other. They are your grace.

Words can go where people cannot - we’ve learned how to knit bones and patch up skin, but words can mend your soul.

And with a gift like that, who are we to hold back ours?

Anonymous asked: If you don't mind me piggybacking on the last question a bit, what would you say to someone who loves to write but has been told that she's not talented enough? It's hard to still find the joy in it after that.

it can be extremely disheartening. but bear in mind who’s been told that in the past. J K Rowling. Stephen King.

your talent isn’t something other people can grade. equally, your skill is forever developing, and the two work in concert to make you the writer you are, and the writer you want to be. i’ve had plenty of people tell me i’m not good enough to be an author. it becomes a hurdle you have to jump over, that’s all. you work harder, focus, develop your prose and your style and eventually you’ll jump it if you’re determined enough.

equally, you do best work when you love what you do. if you love to write, if you wake up thinking about writing, then you’re meant to be a writer. the rest is up to you.
