Hm. Interesting points raised by both. As an employer, I won't let any of my pilots smoke while on the job... however, what they do on their personal time is their own damn business. If I ever hear about any personal-time activities affecting their on-job performance from their students, well, then we have a talk.
So long as they can pass the random drug testing showing they aren't doing anything illegal, I think people's rights to kill themselves slowly is just that: a right. We don't discriminate against fat people (yet) and they're doing just as good a job at ensuring shorter life-spans as the smokers.
Next thing we're going to see is some dumbass with lung cancer suing his employer because they didn't make it against policy to be a smoker. Yeah, just as ludicrous as a fat person suing McDonalds.... :)
