Go and check out Spaceweather.com where they're talking about a beta-gamma-delta magnetic object that is on the surface of the Sun (a sunspot, in fact) pointing right at Earth. If this erupts into an X-ray solar flare, as it has been known to do, it can cause a geomagnetic storm here on Earth that could cause global blackouts and major auroras.
Kind of like the coronal mass ejections that caused aurora borealis as far south as Texas.
The moon is full, its a blue moon, etc. etc. Jung would have had a field day.
