Someone I used to be friended to on Goodreads wrote a long rant about Lovecraft, Lovecraft scholars, and Lovecraft fans. He wouldn't allow Lovecraft to have anything whatsoever going for him. I think it was because of the racism and support for Hitler. Or maybe he didn't like Lovecraft anyway and just used the baggage as an excuse. I know it was tiresome. Lovecraft wasn't the greatest pulp writer ever (as another of my GR friends claims - and yes, it was sort of like being between a rock and a hard place with those two) but his stories have a way of lingering in the mind.

The stories in this compilation are arranged chronologically in order of their writing. The earlier works were definitely much of a sameness, and HPL really did love his chosen selection of adjectives, but it's been fun to watch him hit his stride as I read along. I'm working on "At the Mountains of Madness" right now and it's quite entertaining.
