Franz Ferdinand

May 03, 2004 20:46

I just bought Franz Ferdinand's self-titled album without having heard any of their material before-hand. So far, "Take Me Out" is obviously the catchiest song on the record, and I'm exploring the rest of the album as I write.

Any of you heard of, heard, or like Franz Ferdinand?

Perhaps I should have clarified. :p

Franz Ferdinand, they're a new band from Glasgow, Scotland. And yeah, they're named after the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, assassinated in WWII.

Yeah, I meant WWI.

I can tell you the exact circumstances behind his death, the reasons for his death, etc...but I place it in the wrong time period.

*Shakes head in shame*

Yes! I've been singing their praises for about 3 months now, the album is very good. Other than Take Me Out, there are at least 5 other really catchy songs, and even the remaining songs aren't particularly weak... it's one of the few albums where I don't have to skip any tracks. Some of the lyrics are very... British, though, I'm surprised they're getting so much hype over the pond too.

Xy likes British music, doesn't he? ^_^

I like what I've heard of them. Their sound isn't dissimilar to the Strokes, but rougher round the edges, which I like. Not that I've heard a great deal - I've kept meaning to listen to Woofie's album, but haven't done so to a great extent.

Like I said, I've liked what I've heard. :)

Other than "Take Me Out", so far "Darts of Pleasure", "40'", "Tell Her Tonight", and "The Dark of the Matinee" seem to me to be the most striking songs on the album. As you said, Woofie, none of the songs sound weak. There are two or three songs that take a dip lyrically, but they quickly rebound with very witty, intelligent lyrics. "The Dark of the Matinee" is actually my favorite song lyrically (despite the fact that it seems to be about teenage sexuality :p).

You take your white finger,
Slide the nail under
the top and bottom buttons
of my blazer,
relax the fraying wool,
slacken ties and I'm
not to look at you in the shoe,
but the eyes find the eyes

It's rather romantic, in a horny, get-it-on sort of way. Also, "Michael" may be the most blatant expression of homoeroticism I've ever heard. That song alone is enough to warrant my respect. ^_^

I've had the album on heavy rotation the past two days, so these are just my initial impressions.
