The sun was just setting over the treetops when Shishido stopped to get his bearings. He had been walking steadily for the past few hours towards Tialdyn. He had hoped to have made it to town by this time but had forgotten how long the trip would take. Looking ahead he saw a decent sized space underneath a tree. Just enough for him to lay down comfortably.
At the beginning they'd called his name, loudly and frantically, but that had long since ended once Gakuto never once answered a call. Instead he worked himself farther into the forest, the sun was setting, good, this would help him. They were hunting him, like a wild animal. But he couldn't go back, he wouldn't. He was tired living in the shadow of his long gone father, of a mother living in a dream, of his own people hating him. Well that would end today. He'd climbed up a tree, trying to be as silent as possible.
Hitching his pack higher on his shoulder Shishido moved toward the tree. He had some meat from a previous catch and he knew he had some sort of bread from the last town. That would work well for his dinner. Satisfied that he wouldn't have to hunt he got to the base of the tree and sat down. Hearing some rustling of leave above him paused then dismissed it as some birds or possibly a racoon from the amount of blood that he could sense.
Someone was sitting under the tree....who in the world would do that at this time of day? He leaned a little farther, trying to determine if he was going to be a problem to his escape, he couldn't get a good enough look, leaning a little farther, he put pressure on a flimsy part of the branch and it snapped from underneath him, sending Gakuto tumbling forward. He made a startled noise as he landed right on top of the stranger, reacting immediately, he scrambled up ready to make a run for it.
Setting his pack down beside him he was about to reach in for his food when he heard a large snap from above him. Looking up Shishido just had enough time to catch a glimpse of something brown and red falling toward him before a sharp pain ran through his body as what ever it was landed on top of him. Still wincing in pain as the weight was removed Shishido reached out blindly using his blood elf senses to grab whatever it was. He was not going to let this thing crush him then run off on its merry way.
Feeling something grab at the back of his shirt, Gakuto struggled, trying to loosen himself, he was going to get caught! He could hear them coming, he yelled out frantically hoping it would get the stranger to release his grip, "Let go!" pulling at the hand, trying to get it in reach so maybe he could bite it, he was willing to do anything at this point, as long as he didn't have to go back.
Feeling cloth in his hands Shishido tightened his grip and sat up more so that he could get his other hand around to grab at the idiotic kid that had landed on him. And it was a kid, he could see that now that they were both on the ground. "You don't flatten somebody then expect to get away with it do you? Stop moving!" he growled. Readjusting his grip to get his hands away from searching teeth he gave a hard pull hoping to bring the brat down to the ground.
Toppling over at the hard tug, Gakuto landed on the ground, winded though certainly not beaten. He gave a swift kick in the guy's general direction, hitting a soft part of his stomach before trying to use the chance to escape again. As if he didn't have enough problems to deal with as it was.
Getting the kid on the ground finally Shishido let down his guard for a second to re-evaluate his injuries. Unfortunately this was a second to long as he suddenly felt all the wind leave his lungs as a foot was introduced to his stomach. Gasping for air he loosened his grip allowing the brat to slip out of them. Growling harder he quickly pulled himself to his feet to give chase. There was no way he'd let this kid go now.
He could hear him following, and that only made Gakuto run faster, his short hair running behind him in a red haze, it was an accident! What did he have to get so worked up about? The falling had been an accident...okay, maybe not so much the kick, but the guy was crazy, he had people after him, what else was he suppose to do? The sun finally was setting, thank god, Gakuto's eyes flickered to a darker edge of the forest, making his way quickly. He knew the advantages of his kind.
Rushing after the idiot Shishido could feel his hunting instincts surge through his veins. Focusing his eyes on the flash of red in front of him he bit down on the lingering pain. Suddenly, just as they were passing a thicker group of trees, the kid vanished. Pulling to a stop in momentary shock he glanced around then closed his eyes. He know of only one race that could disappear that thoroughly that quickly. Still their skills meant nothing to a blood elf. Not when he could hear his prey's frantic hear beat.
Making his way much slower than before, Gakuto broke through the brush, hoping that had gotten rid of him. Crazy guy was trying to kill him, he could tell. He was about to go a little farther when he felt something snatch at his forearm, tightening uncomfortably till the red-head made a sound of protest, twisting around to deck the guy before his other wrist was snatched at. Great, no place to go.
Grabbing his other wrist before he could add to his growing collection of busies he pinned them to a near by tree. "What the hell!" Staring the kid down Shishido could feel the kid shaking in his grasp. Taking a deep breath to cool down his instincts lest he kill the kid, he caught his eyes and just stared him down. "Now you'll gonna explain to me what you think you were doing falling out of nowhere then acting like a herd Em'turu of were after you."
Breathing shallowly his hair full of twigs and a array of scratches decorating his skin, Gakuto glared back, unbelievably still in a state of defiance even though he was being stared down by a livid stranger. "I didn't mean to fall on you! I picked a wrong branch is all!" Gakuto yelled back, choosing not to answer the second question.
Wrong branch. Wrong branch his ass. If you were going to climb a tree you should know enough to stay up there. "Well what the hell were you doing up a tree in the first place?" Pulling his head back a little more he took a better look at the boy he had pinned. "And where are you from anywhere? I know the nearest village is at least half a day's walk from here?"
"Why would I tell you?" he breathed a little deeper after the other pulled farther back, giving him more room. He could be so far away right now, if the other would just let him go he'd make sure they'd never run into each other again. The bark was digging into his back uncomfortably, "Let me go!"
"No!" Shishido tightened his grip a little more as he sensed the kid was going to try and make another escape. "Not until you tell me why I shouldn't just knock you out and drag your sorry ass back to Tialdyn, because that is where you're from right? I doubt an idiot as clumsy as you could have made it much further."
His eyes darkened dangerously at the 'idiot' comment, he'd been called it many times as a young child, as well as many other harsh names, 'half-breed-bastard' being one of the kinder versions, what made it hurt even worse is that each of them where true. "Don't, call me that." his voice suddenly low.
"Why? Are gonna start crying?" Shishido had got the kids measure by now. The only way he would find anything about the brat would be to make him angry enough. "Boo hoo. Well suck it up! Because guess what? It's not any better out there in the 'real world'. You think running away's gonna help any? Bull. You know nothing."
"Shut up!" Kicking forward, almost hitting the other, but he was just barely out of reach, "I don't care! Anywhere's better then there!" He didn't care where he went, didn't even know where he was going, all he knew is that he had to leave. "You don't know and you don't care! So just let me go!"
"Che." Shishido scoffed shifting his legs back a little more. "Of course you have it the worse. No one's life is as bad as yours was. Poor baby. Look at me. Do you know what I am?" Shishido stared hard at the brat. "I'm a blood elf. I know about hate... and I also know what it's feels like to need to get away." Stepping back a bit further he loosened his grip on one arm while tightening the other. "Come on. That scratch on your face looks nasty. I should have something for it."
Gakuto tried to pull back out of reach, but it didn't do much good as he was dragged back to where the stranger had been camped out, "Stop! They're going to find me!" he cried out before he could stop himself, because the panic was starting to settle in, it was dark, they could be anywhere. He realized he probably didn't have it as bad as a blood elf, but at that moment, he didn't care.
"Well of course they're gonna find you if you keep yelling like that." He called over his shoulder. "Just shut up. There's no one else around. At least not close enough for me to sense so just chill." Looking ahead he sigh. He knew they should get back to his stuff and clear off the kids wounds. Now which way did they run?
Huffing loudly, Gakuto didn't say anything more, allowing himself to be dragged forward again, then the guy paused, looking slightly confused, if only for a moment. Guessing what was baffling the blood-elf, Gakuto nodded to the left, though he wasn't sure if the other could see, "Your stuff is over there."
Glancing back as the kid spoke he quickly turned and started yanking him along again. "I knew that." Once they reached the tree where his stuff was still laying slightly falling out of the open bag he had dropped Shishido paused yet again. "If I let you go will you bolt again? Or should I just save myself the trouble of wondering and tie you up?"
"As long as you're not planning on taking me back for a reward or something, I don't care." He shot back, brushing hair out of his face and pulling out pieces of twigs with the one free hand he had at the moment.
"The money's not worth my time. Now sit." Letting go of the kid Shishido turned to check on his pack. Keeping his senses open in case he tried to make a break for it he took a quick mental inventory. All the important stuff seemed to be there, compass, map, food... Reaching into his small stash of food he grabbed up a small bread roll. "Hey kid." He paused for a moment to make sure he got his attention then tossed the roll behind his back at where he knew he was still standing. "Catch."
Catching it out of reflex, Gakuto have the stranger a very confused look before carefully sitting down and starting to eat, since he hadn't done so since the beginning of yesterday. He'd considered grabbing food before he left, but that would've just tipped them off even faster than before. "Why are you doing this?" he asked before he could think about what he was saying, but it was true. No one really cared, maybe his mother did, but she was too lost in the past where everything was perfect. "Why don't you just let me go?" his eyebrows furrowed slightly.
"Why? That's a good question?" A really good one since Shishido wasn't really sure why either. He just had a feeling that this kid was like him. Taking him back home wouldn't solve anything and if he just let the kid go he'd either get caught or eaten in a day... two tops. Digging further into his bag he pulled out some healing ointment. "I told you I know what it's like to need to get away." Turning he held the container out for him. "Let's just leave it at that and be grateful I am since if I weren't you probably go and fall out of another tree and end up breaking your neck. Now what's your name? Or do you want me to go around calling your brat?"
"Mukahi Gakuto" He said simply in return shrugging lightly at the brat comment, figuring he wasn't being pinned against a tree or trying to hide in bushes or being yelled at, so it was much better in his book. He figured once he was done cleaning his wounds, the guy would just leave him be, he didn't know how wrong he'd be, "What about you?" he said, taking, whatever was in the container and putting it over the worst of his cuts.
"Shishido Ryou." Wandering around the clearing Shishido gathered the stray branches that the brat, no, that Gakuto had taken down with him on his fall putting them into a pile. Then taking some of the smaller twigs and some stray grass he reached into a side pocket of his pack for some flint. Striking them together creating sparks until one landed on the small pile lighting it up. "So were you headed anywhere in particular or were you just running?" Blowing lightly on the small fire he added some larger branches until he got a decent sized blaze going.
Eyes flickering back and forth between Ryou and the flame, Gakuto dearly hoped that he could do what he said he could and that none of the people after him where nearby or coming, "If I had a place to go, they could find me faster." he said simply, because it was true, if he didn't have a direction, there was less of a chance they'd guess it.
"Well then I guess I'm going to be stuck with you for a while." Shishido smirked as he caught the dumbfounded expression on Gakuto's face. He had been wandering toward Tialdyn but not for any reason so he could just as well pass the town by. That would just mean that he would have to do some hunting before the next town. "You couldn't have expected to get very far with just the clothes on your back now did you?"
Sputtering at the thought of being dragged along with this guy....Shishido, to where ever he decided he wanted to go, it made Gakuto shudder just thinking about it. He folded his arms at the comment, slightly insulted but not enough to get fully mad, just enough to make him mutter back, "I would've found a way" he folded his legs up, wrapping his arms around them, not sure if he was annoyed or grateful. Maybe a little bit of both.
"Yah I'm sure. Seeing as you couldn't even find your way out of a tree without injuring yourself and innocent bystanders." Shaking his head he smirked into the fire. At least the kid would provide him with some entertainment if he brought him with him. Positioning some meat that he got from his pack around the fire to warm it up Shishido grabbed two more small loaves of bread. Passing one to the younger boy he took a seat next to him. "So I got the fact that you're a shadow elf and going by your appearence you're what 150 to 200 years old? Have you ever been out of Tialdyn before?"
"Half-shadow elf" Gakuto said, somewhat frustrated that the other seemed to know so much it was unnerving and annoying willing to at least give Shishido something he didn't know, "And no....I haven't" He shuffled one of his feet against the ground, kicking a small rock into the fire watching it slowly grow warm. "And the tree was an accident! I thought you were someone trying to follow me." if they guy was going to act like he knew so much, he might as well get his facts straight.
"Half huh? Yah, I can see that." So that was where some of the anger was coming from. Shishido had seen first hand some of the hate directed towards those with mixed blood. "Night elves don't usually have such bright hair." Reaching over he ruffled the messy red hair pulling out another twig in the process. "And if you thought I was someone sent to drag you back to your town how in the world did you get in a position to fall out of the tree. What did you do? Lean over for a better look at the person that was going to take you back?" Shishido snickered getting up to check on the meat.
Shaking his hair back into place, Gakuto frowned deeply at Shishido, "No!" yes.... He was pretty sure he was going to go insane if he stayed with him for long. First the guy wanted to kill him, now he was feeding him. If he'd met anyone before that didn't make any sense, this guy took the cake....and the meal before said cake. "And don't you think they'd see the fire" he said, gesturing to the flame.
"Eh?" Shishido stared at the fire for a moment as it's flames threw shadows against the trees. He didn't want to admit he hadn't thought of that. It had really been a long time since he had been chased by anything or anyone. "If there was anyone around possibly, but I don't sense anyone." Actually the lack of any searches was puzzling him. Though then again they probably still thought that Gakuto wouldn't get very far and would come crawling home soon. "I don't know about you but I like my meat at least somewhat cooked. I can put it out if it's make you feel better."
Shaking his head, Gakuto felt his head droop slightly, leaning against one of his arms, he wasn't sure if he trusted this guy...but it's not like he had a lot of choices, his two last tries at running off didn't work well. He figured as long as Shishido couldn't sense anyone, then Gakuto would let it drop...but if he was lying, he'd figure out a way to get back. As he stared at the fire, he felt his eyes slowly beginning to droop, he hadn't been sleeping for a couple days, night is when the shadow elves came out, "You better not be giving me away or anything." he said with a large yawn so it lost whatever might have seemed threatening in the first place (which wasn't much).
Noticing the other boys yawns Shishido stood up to stretch a bit and to give the other more room. He moved to look at the meat wincing a little as he streached what felt like a bruised muscle in his stomach. Seeing that they were cooked he carefully brought them over to where they had been sitting. Passing one of the pieces to Gakuto he reached over to his pack and found the small blanket that he normally used. "Eat, then you can sleep. You got my adrenaline pumping so I won't be sleeping for another few hours." It felt funny watching out for the kid but somehow it just worked. Shishido hadn't had a permanent traveling partner since he and his brother parted ways probably a hundred years ago but having Gakuto there was a nice change.
Blinking up at Shishido a few times, Gakuto wondered if he was just going crazy thinking about trusting this guy. He hadn't trusted anyone that he'd lived with for years, and he'd just met Shishido probably less than an hour ago. Eyebrows furrowed once again, Gakuto was still confused, "Why do you care?" he asked, though he'd asked the same sort of questions only a few moments ago. It just didn't make any sense to him, he didn't seem like the guy to really trust others either, and Gakuto was well aware that he was less than desirable company.
"I have no idea." Reaching up to his own head Shishido finally noticed that it was starting to come out of the tie he had put it in. "Maybe it's because you remind me a little of myself. And I can't very well leave you alone now that I'm involved." Pulling his hair back and retying it he glanced over at Gakuto's still confused face. "Just don't think about it to hard. You may strain something. I promise you won't have to go back if you don't want to. You're old enough to leave home anyway. I couldn't imagine being stuck in the same town for so many years."
Shrugging, Gakuto yawned again, eating the rest of the meat before adjusting the blanket more firmly around him, shivering slightly when he realized that he was cold. "She didn't want me to leave....I remind her to much of....my father," Grimacing at the word as if it was a dirty unwanted thing, Gakuto suddenly realized with a start that he'd said too much and started to lay down without saying a word.
"She? I'm guessing your mom huh?" Glancing over Shishido was met with Gakuto's back. "Tch. Well we have a while before we reach the next village plently of time to go into that later. Oh hey before you nod off completely just wanted to make sure. Since you're half you don't mind traveling during the day right?" Shishido suddenly remembered the night elves traditional aversion to direct sunlight. "Cuz, while no one is searching right now they probably will in the morning when they realize you won't be going back."
Snorting at the thought, Gakuto smiled when he knew Shishido couldn't see it, "How do you think I got away in the first place? They didn't want to come out and look for me during the day, and by the time night rolled around, I was hoping to be where they couldn't find me." Shifting a bit on the ground, he blew hair out of his eyes, he wasn't an idiot after all, sometimes there were advantages to being a half, however few they seemed to be.
"Well that makes things easier." Shishido leaned back against the tree that Gakuto had fallen out of earlier that evening. Smiling crookedly to himself he figured it was a good thing he came across the kid before anyone else did. A tree that he couldn't stay in could not be called the best hiding spot around. Still he could hear the exhaustion in the red head's voice and figured there would always be time for more teasing later. "I'll keep watch the rest of the night then wake you around dawn. So then I can catch an hour or two of sleep. Then we can get going once I'm up again"
Nodding Gakuto muttered a quick "Yeah, yeah." before falling asleep. As did most people looked when they fell asleep, he looked much more innocent and peaceful than he did during his wakeful hours. He'd worry about this baffling arrangement another day.
