Why do people get mad about other viewpoints?

I'm talking to some people in Second Life, furries, and I mention that every school kid needs to read Atlas Shrugged. You'd think I bit the head off a baby fox the way people reacted! Things I heard said: Objectivism is a cult, it's for assholes and such comments
