Interesting that you post this right as I am going through a major personality crisis myself.

Interesting that some that you think know you the best and have known you for over a decade really don't know you at all. The way they would describe you would not fit how you would describe yourself, and in my case would be a person I wouldn't even want to know- much less a person I would want to be.

I'm thinking it's really a case of "no one knows anyone"

That's the only thing I can come up with for such gross misunderstanding.

Old Zen story:

Bodhidharma came before the emperor, who began by having a minister recount how many thousands of temples the emperor had built, how many thousands of monks were supported in those temples, and how many thousands of sutras those monks had copied.

"What merit have I accrued by these offerings?" the emperor asked, expecting, perhaps, some elaborate description of his rewards in the Pure Land.

"None whatsoever," Bodhidharma replied.

The emperor was puzzled. "What then is the first principle of the holy teaching?" he asked.

"Vast emptiness, nothing holy," Bodhidharma said.

"Who then is standing before me?"

"I don't know," Bodhidharma said, and took his leave.
