((Tag: Karolina. Blond, gay, earth-born and/or -raised alien teenagers unite! …Late at night.))
It was a few days after the Kree-Skrull invasion, at approximately oh-dark-thirty in the morning. And there was singing in the kitchen.
"Herman met Sally on the beach one night," Teddy puttered around the kitchen. "The sea was calm and the starfish

"It's, er, from the sixties, I think. It just, you know, popped into my head and..." he rubbed the back of his neck. "I hope I didn't wake you up or anything."
This was actually the first time that Teddy had ventured out of his room since Kl'rt had gone off with the Kree and the Skrulls had left to prepare to host "Emperor Dorrek". A part of Teddy hoped that the two races would be too busy fighting each other to come after him after the year was up, but he was pretty sure that they'd both just come right back to try to get him again. But everyone had put up with him going into hiding. Billy had gone foraging for him before, but Billy was asleep right now and Teddy hadn't wanted to wake him.
He needed to start talking to people on his own eventually.
"Um, would you like some tea? It's the loose-leaf stuff, chamomile."

She'd learned the kitchen's layout quickly in the past few days. She moved around Teddy, pulling a mixing bowl and a cookie sheet from a bottom cabinet, flour and brown sugar from the pantry, and eggs from the fridge. She had brown sugar drops in mind, for some reason. Maybe because, with their almost bland sweetness, they went well with tea.
"How's the rest of it go?" she asked as she fished a set of measuring cups from a silverware drawer. For some reason she felt completely at ease...maybe because Teddy was so awkward, it just seemed as though one of them had to be.
She'd been angry at him for about thirty seconds, just after the aliens left. Part of her wanted to accuse him for everything that had happened, as if he really could have put a stop to the warring Skrull empire. Her more rational side pointed out that he would ( ... )

"Yeah, I couldn't sleep either." he said, reaching up to get a couple of mugs out of one of the other cupboards. "And I didn't want to wake up Billy because he's been running himself ragged what with everything recently."
He watched Karolina out of the corner of his eye. He'd heard about the Pride and their kids after everything had gone down, but L.A. had seemed so very far away when you were in New York where you could hardly walk a block without running into a super hero.
Teddy cleared his throat. "Well, Herman told his Sally and it broke her heart/She loved that lobster right from the start/He took her in his claws and said "I'll always be yours,/But still, dear, we'll have to part." 'Cause crabs walk sideways and lobsters walk straight/And we won't let you take her for your mate."
Teddy took the kettle off of the stove and began fixing the tea. You'd think that a place that had loose-leaf tea would also have tea strainers somewhere.

"From what I've seen," she said slowly, trying to chase it down, "Skrulls are really anal retentive. They keep track of everything, even if it's just to make sure nobody's getting any more than the very least they're entitled to. If your mom worked for this Princess, her name's got to be in a database somewhere. Maybe we could access that info through Xavin's ship, or one of the busted ones we've been pulling out of the Tower all week!"
The first thing that had occurred to her was something similar to the Flashback spell Nico had used on future-Gert's body a lifetime ago. But she figured you had to have someone with actual memories to access, and the Super Skrull, the only person who might have known Mrs. Altman's real name, was long gone.

"D'you really think it might be in there?" he asked hopefully. Well, obviously, as she had been the one to suggest it, but it gave him hope. Not that it would tell him that much, but it was something. There was something that he could do.
He didn't know if she would have preferred to be remembered by the name she'd been given when she was hatched or the name she had made for herself on Earth, but it was still something.

With the heavy mood somewhat lifted, the smell of smoke suddenly became that much more obvious. With a startled yelp, Karolina clambered to her feet and yanked the oven door open. Burned to a crisp. She grabbed a pot holder and fanned the smoke away, reaching up to turn on the ran over the oven. The last thing she wanted to do was set of a smoke alarm this late at night.
"Damn," she scowled. "I never burn food." Doing so back at the Hostel would have been an enormous waste on their slim budget. At least they didn't have to worry about empty stomachs while they were here.

"Anything I can do to help?" he asked, smiling at Karolina.
