Cassie was so glad to see Vision and Patriot she very nearly gave into a distinct urge to throw her arms around the both of them.
"Be careful, there are bombs in the collar!" She told Eli. She still wasn't sure how unstable those were, and she didn't want another explosion to kill them all.
Cassie turned back to the woman who'd been threatening them and didn't bother, or rather forgot, to remove Kate's borrowed clothes before they ripped as she outgrew them. If she was going to be shocked like Kate, she hoped it wouldn't have as big an effect on her due to her mass.
Dr. Sinesis was knocked off her feet by the energy blast, but soon regained them. She turned to face the new intruders, her face oddly distorted, like something was trying to push through her skin. "Stupid, stupid children..." she said, her voice a hiss. Her jumpsuit and skin started ripping, and she seemed to fill the corridor. Glistening beneath shedding skin was a dark green carapice.
Skin and cloth fell away from the doctor, leaving behind eight feet of giant praying manits. "Do you really think you can stop me?" the creature hissed through her mandibles. She brought a now scythe like arm around to slice at Cassie, intent on disembowling the girl.
Billy gave up on his attempts to move Zack to concentrate on the very big bug that was now trying to kill his friends. With an inarticulate shout, he threw a ball of lightning at Sinesis. It danced around her for a few minutes before sliding off, having done nothing more than singe what was left of Sinesis' skin and clothes.
"[Stature!]" the Vision tackled the other Young Avenger out of the way of the doctor's attack.
Why hadn't Mrs. Xanathos mentioned that Sinesis could transform into a giant praying mantis?!
A giant praying mantis with very sharp claws.
The Vision clapped a hand to his right calf as if that would encourage the sparking gash there to heal faster. "[Billy, look out!]"
He couldn't afford to be injured. Not now! He'd be injured later when they weren't fighting a giant insect.
"Dammit, Kate! Wake up!" Patriot snapped. "We're not playing Sleeping Beauty here!" he glanced over at the giant bug advancing towards Billy and grabbed several throwing stars, carefully lowering Kate onto the floor.
"If you don't wake up now, I'm going to tell everyone that you want your codename to be 'Hawkingbird'." he growled over his shoulder as he threw the stars at the space where he assumed the neck to be.
The gigantic mantis's leg never reached Billy; it was blocked, instead, by its exact duplicate; wincing, Teddy held the attacking claw off with his own arm, firming the shift in his mind, visualizing the hardened chitin necessary to keep Sinesis's limb from slicing off his hand (he thought it was his hand, anyway). He pushed Billy backwards, behind him; this wasn't the place for their heaviest long-range hitter to be risking himself in hand-to-hand.
"Think of some sort of spell while the rest of us stall her! Or get the collars off so we can get out of here!" he hissed softly before moving forward to take his own place facing the monstress before them.
So Sinesis liked gigantic insects? He could do gigantic insects. That was fine. Great. Wonderful. Gigantic insects it was.
"That. Is. Enough!" Sinesis hissed, grabbing Cassie's foot and throwing her into a wall. "Control! Activate Detination Protocal Zed!"
"Would that be pushing the big red button right here, Vanessa?" Rowena's very calm voice floated out of the hidden speakers. "I'm afraid it's not working right now. I seem to have shorted it out. You know how it is with me and technology."
"Vas?!" Vanessa shrieked, trying to scythe Teddy in half and missing. The orange aura batteling Billy's blue started to flicker out.
"Did you really think I was going to let you get away with this, Vanessa dear? You're getting dumb in your old age."
The blue aura overwhelmed the orange, and the collars snapped off everyone's necks, clattering to the floor like the crack of doom. "Oh my. Loosing your focus, dearie? Tch. This never would have happened in the old days..."
Cassie groaned. At first she couldn’t tell if her eyes were open or not but soon the darkness began to recede, but there were still large black splotches obscuring her sight, no matter how many times she blinked.
She couldn’t say she didn’t expect something like that, but she didn’t think it would hurt this damn much. She stumbled to her feet. The praying mantis-person gave out a screech that sounded more scared than pissed. Maybe someone had taken advantage of the distraction she had given.

Oh God, thank God that missed, Teddy groaned as he stumbled backwards, doing his best to ignore the shallow wound that stretched across his stomach. Thank God for healing powers knitting fat, muscle, and skin together again; and thank God for Billy disabling those collars at last

Something warm, wet, and soft slid over Teddy's hands. He'd penetrated her carapice and now there was an awful lot of blood and vicera leaking out. The woman hissed angrily at him, the green chiten dropping away like a shed skin to reveal the naked and bleeding woman beneath, clutching her stomach and forcing her own intestines back in. The wound looked like it was almost closing on its own, but with all the blood it was hard to tell.
"This is your only warning, everyone." Rowena's voice came over the speakers. "This building will self destruct in ten minutes. I'm deactivating all force fields. Anyone who wants to live to see the next sunrise had best get going now."
There was a pause. "On a side note, you did a very good job, young man. Don't take her with you, she'll heal on her own. That is all, thank you."
"All in favor of making Princess Pitiful Kate's official super-hero name?" Billy asked, still heading away from the base. Eliza was moving swiftly across the ground... until she stopped suddenly.
"We need to wait here." she said. "Grandmother's coming."
Billy stopped, setting Teddy and Eli down as gently as possible. "What the hell happened in there?" he asked, looking to the dark girl for answers. "What's going on, besides the obvious?"
"You all have just gotten in the middle of a long running fight that's probably going to still be going long after we're all in our graves." Eliza said simply, edging away from Teddy with this look in her eyes.
"Reminds me of the X-men and Magneto," Sofia said softly, looking back at the building they all just escaped from. Anyone who knew anything about the X-men and the mutant terrorist couldn't argue with her analogy. She could imagine Nori mentioning the irony in this building getting destoried like the Academy did so often, causing a smile to come to her face.
She turned her attention to the others, noticing their wounds. It was times like this she wished Josh was around. "How long are we going to have to wait?" she inquired of Eliza, approaching Teddy and Eli. "They don't look too good."
"[Note to self: in the future, bring bandages on rescue missions.]" the Vision muttered. He looked around. "[Where's Tommy? I assumed that he was kidnapped along with the rest of you. I saw the metal teen from the Devil's Due escape when we were fighting the doctor, but I haven't seen Tommy.]"
Patriot had managed to grab a uniform coat during their escape and was holding it to his shoulder to staunch the blood flow. His grandparents were going to kill him for getting himself hurt like this. He stifled a laugh at the idea that he might actually get that blood transfusion from his grandfather that he had claimed to have had in the earlier days. He hoped that he wasn't going into hypovolemic shock. Though if he was thinking in big words like that, he probably was. Damn.
Cassie slid off of Kate (she didn't think her friend would appreciate it if she dug into her stomach to jump off) and grew as she fell onto the ground, eventually regaining her usual size a few moments after she stood.
"He's either taken the opportunity to run away from us, or he's still in there. Unless he's on the other side of the building."

“Ow.” She said feebly.
