Giving the Devil His Due (tag Hawkeye

Mar 08, 2006 14:03

The Devil's Due took up the first floor of an older building just on the edge of Mutant Town. The building had been there since the early 1920s, and the ice cream parlor had been there since 1973. The 12 floors above the ice cream parlor were apartments that nobody officially rented ( Read more... )

Hawkeye had done some recon before getting to the edge of mutant town. He had found out the Young Avengers had been in this area and decided to come looking for answers. He walked, stopping at the sign and smirked.
"Wow not obvious at all." He thought to himself.
He knocked on the door seeing a man sweeping in the shop.

If Agamemnon Xanathos had been one to read minds -- and being a normal human, thank you very much, he was not -- he could have told Clint Barton that subtlety and Rowena Mox-Xanathos were two things that had never been mutually inclusive. Instead, the man merely looked up from his newspaper, one dark eyebrow raised as he looked at the stranger knocking on the glass door.

Folding the paper again with a rustle, he stood, walking briskly towards the door. The boy surely wasn't going to speak up to this stranger, and there was no point in antagonizing him by expecting him to.

Looking through the glass, the thin, swarthy man spoke just loudly enough to be heard through the glass. "If you're looking to take last-minute advantage of the coupon that ran in last weeks Mutant Town Times, you've come too late today. Come back tomorrow, they'll still honor it. They always do."

"Dont play me for an idiot man. I know about this place. Where can i find the kids?"
Clint didnt feel like having time to play. He figured it was only a matter of time till Cap came looking for him. He figured easier to get in and ask this guy the questions he needed to before his cover was fully blown.

Dark eyes stared at the man through the door for a long moment before Agamemnon replied. "Given that I have no idea who you are, and that I have no idea which of the dozens of children that cycle through this shop on a daily basis you are referring to, I'm afraid that I can't tell you that."

Where the hell was a family member who actually came here fairly often? Cyrus, of course, was going to be completely useless in this situation, which was not entirely the boy's fault, but Agamemnon certainly had no idea what he was supposed to do when they had a visitor who claimed want knowledge that he certainly didn't have. Though the stranger did indeed seem slightly familiar.

((OOC: I've been assuming, since you've been using 'Clint' to refer to him and haven't mentioned codename/costume in your posts, that he's not there as 'Hawkeye'? If I'm wrong, please maybe mention it in a post?))

Rowena looked blankly at Hawkeye for a moment before letting out something that sounded suspiciously like a string of swear words. "Agamemnon, deal with the children first!" she barked, her gaze swiviling from the undead archer to her son. "Abraham, do not argue with me, I'm not about to bleed to death! Our Eliza is a dab hand with a makeshift bandage. And somebody see to William, or his father is going to have a right fit when he finds out about this! It's probably just a bit of backlash or something."

Eliza shook herself, staggering to her feet. She cast one warey eye around. "Goddamn. I'll... tea. Yes." She made a bee line for the kitchen.

"SHUT UP, ALL OF YOU!"The yell echoed throughout the store, startling the more sensitive of those present, breaking through what was surely imminent chaos if the situation were left to degenerate further ( ... )

“[Patriot was cut badly.]” The Vision said. Eli shot him a dirty look, which the Vision caught and volleyed back at him. “[You did.]” The Vision turned back to the doctor. “[It seemed like he lost a lot of blood, but he didn’t pass out. Wiccan and Mrs. Xanathos healed him, but I don’t think that they were able to replenish his bodily fluids. Stature was thrown head first into a wall, and I believe that Wiccan was complaining of a headache and having difficulty standing before he transported us here. Hulkling was slashed across the abdomen, but he’s healed that himself for the most part, but it might be a good choice to take a look at him anyway.]”

The Vision realized that he was probably talking entirely too much, but it was a relief to have a doctor (who wasn’t an evil, magic-using, Nazi-bug) to help them. Such a relief.

“…Take good care of my friends.”

[I’m trying, Iron Lad. I won’t disappoint you.]

So, can anyone actually tell me what the bloody hell we just went through in a way that will make this all make sense? Jonothan asked, one hand resting lightly on Penny's shoulder. On a more private mental band, he asked Sophia You alright, ducks?

The British mutant had settled himself and Penance near the juke box, and Penny was currently inspecting the relic from a reletively safe distance.

Sofia was just as lost as Jono. Everything was happening so fast that she barely had time to react to it all. Unlike the others, she hadn't gotten sick from the teleportation, though she did begin to feel a headache coming on. She wrapped the blanket around her shoulders, standing a little ways from Penny and Jono as she watched the scene unfold in front of her.

When she heard Jono's voice in her mind, she turned her head to him and nodded. How long had it been since a telepath spoke to her mentally? The last one to do so was Ms. Frost, back when the Institute was in chaos over M-day...

"I'm fine. Just overwhelmed, I guess."

Overwhelmed and upset that she could do nothing to help. Unfortunatly, this was not a foreign feeling to her.

Jonothan grabbed one of the blankets and carefully tucked it around Sofia's shoulders. Day in the life. he said. Day in the bleedin' life. Bet you thought you were done with all this nonsense the day you left the Institute, eh? God knows I did.

He looked around the room, cocking his head to one side, clearly waiting for an answer to his first question.

As idealistic as she was, Sofia knew being a mutant and former Xavier's attendant meant a normal life was impossible.

"Deep down, I suppose I did. But things were better before I had to leave."

Not to say things weren't good now, but being with there were many people she missed from her days there. Like Dani, David, Jay... Julian. She moved her eyes to look down at the floor, tracing her foot along the lines of the tiles. If only she could have everything back, before M-Day took it from her.

The woman was just as impressive the second time as she had been the first time the Vision had seen her. Perhaps even moreso, since she was actually looking at him. But she was also an adult - the Vision could deal with adults. With adults, it was less of a "please like me and be my friend" feeling and more of a "I can be helpful and responsible".

The Vision limped slightly as he moved out of the speedster's path to the apples. His leg was almost back in working order, though he was still favoring it a little.

"[Is there anything we can do to assist you, ma'am?]" The Vision asked, slipping into formal speech patterns.

"Can you make tea?" Helena asked, her voice a low growl. The scars on her face twisted it so it was impossible to tell what her expression actually was. "Haven't got a clue where Mother keeps anything in this damn place, so you're on your own for finding it. Auggie's probably going to want coffee soon, too." She rased a large hand and waved it in the general direction of a row of cabnets. "S'probably over there. Cyrus you stay away from those chickens."

"Yesmother." Cyrus pulled his hand away from one of the chicken bodies quickly, cringing away.

"And you. The speedy one. When you're done with that apple," her voice dripped sarcasm, "would you be good enough to take some of this soup out to the people who need it?"

Tommy looked at the woman and back at his half eaten apple before looking up at her again. He didn’t get the sarcasm; it wasn’t as if she hadn’t growled at them first and he had certain requirements to remain standing upright. He was stealing food for the good of everyone involved really. No one appreciated how truly considerate and selfless he was. That was a damn shame.

He finished the apple off and, after tucking another one into his pocket for later, walked over to the woman. She was even more intimidating when he was standing next to her and he couldn’t help blinking a little. It wasn’t her face so much as her height that gave him pause. He felt bad for Cyrus; the poor guy looked a few moments away from a panick attack.

“No problem.”

Helena grunted. "Cyrus. Bowls."

The boy (despite his own height, he couldn't possibly have been much older than Tommy) scampered foward, tentitivly putting a stack of large bowls near his mother's elbow before skittering back. Helena filled each of them efficiantly, then promptly ignored them.

The soup was some kind of beef stew, with large chunks of meat and carrots.

"And keep away from those chickens, boy!" Helena snapped suddenly. Cyrus dove under the counter, hands covering his head.

Jonothan listened with half an ear to the conversations going on around him, and considered his options. He made a few decisions as he thought. One of them was that he was bloody well not getting involved with the Avengers any more than he had to. The other was that it might be a good idea to minimalize the chaos by getting those of were reletivly uninjured and not really all that involved out of there.

Say, luv, Jono said, putting his hand back on Sofia's shoulder. It occurse to me that maybe, since you don't seem to badly hurt, that it might be a plan for someone to get you back home before we all get swept up in the general insanity that is the Avengers?

Sofia's mind was preoccupied with trying to process all the conversations around her, and it was doing a fairly good job at it too until Jono's voice interrupted her train of thought. She jumped slightly, then turned her head to look up at the older mutant next to her. That's right! She had been so preoccupied with everything here she failed to realize her further absence would cause Ms. Collins to worry. What time was it anyway?

"That is a good idea," she agreed. "I must get back to Salem Center before Ms. Collins worries."

Need a lift? Ain't a Blackbird, but I've got a car and I'm not due at the station for another few hours, Jono said, heading for the door. Penance trailed after him, a silent red and black shadow. I'm Jono, and the gel's Penny.

Eliza raised her head as she saw Jono leading Sofia towards the door and finally left of her merceless teasing of Billy. She darted out of the booth and very, very briefly touched the girl's arm. "I wanted to say thanks," Eliza said, drawing her hand back quickly. "For. Y'know. Trying to help me. If you're ever around again, I'll... I dunno. Give you free ice cream or something." She hesistated. "Didn't catch your name, mystery girl."

"I don't mind the car. We never got to go on the Blackbird anyway." Sofia replied, glancing back one last time before following Jono.

Sofia jumped for the second time when she felt some touch her arm. When she saw that it had been Eliza, she was even more startled. Didn't touching others hurt her? Before she could question her actions, Eliza continued with her thanks.

"I'm just glad that you are ok now," Sofia said with a smile. "And I am Sofia. Sofia Mantega. Hopefully I can stop by sometime, it would be nice to see you and your friends again." She chuckled some, "And, of course, ice cream is always a plus."

She looked back at Jono and Penny who were waiting for her at the door. "I have to go. Thank you all for the help." At that, she turned from the group and heading out of the shop with the two mutants.
