While I don't want to learn Russian (at least, for the moment) I am fascinated by Russian culture. As someone from the UK I see our culture being eroded away by things that come from America. I have absolutely nothing against American people but I certainly don't like the idea of every street in every town and city in the world having exactly the same shops and exactly the same things on sale. One great thing, for me, about travelling is to be able to notice the differences and find the things that make another country or city unique. The way things are going it will soon be impossible to tell where you are in the world because everywhere will look like everywhere else ( ... )

I'm sorry it was such a difficult question, and I'm so pleased that you answered it very well. :))

I think you are right. People become stronger and more complete when they have to fight for the kind of freedoms that a lot of other people in the world take for granted. I really take your point about there being no competition (and all your other reasons) for these huge multi-national companies in countries like Russia, and that's why they are there.

I just feel that Russian people are great and that Russia should be taking a lead in the culture of Europe as a whole, rather than that lead coming from somewhere that is derived from Europe but which is not Europe.

Thanks so much for answering my question. I feel very proud that I have friends in Russia, and indeed all over the world, together we will work towards making the world a better place! :)))

I plan on learning Russian when I can move to a school that teaches it - probably in about two years.

As for questions, I have one: I have heard some goods are only sold to tourists, and some stores only foreign people may shop at. Is this true? Why is this?

There is a genius in our tourism industry. Shop assistants sold very strange things for tourists such as Budenny cap (pointed helmet formerly worn by Red Army men). Russian doesn’t wear it now. We see this cap on old movies or on the head of tourist, it is help us (and swindler) recognize tourist. First rule of economic is demand give rise to offer. Why do you buy it?
I’ve been in Egypt and saw how Russian tourists believe in salesperson’s tale about extraterrestrial Egyptian culture and buy a lot of Egyptian magic ornament, statuette and perfume. May be American and European consider Russia in the same way - Russia isn’t ordinary country, Russia is other planet.

Yeah, there are similar swindles here where I live. Almost everyone here is a tourist though, we have more tourists than natives.

I noticed that you had a lot of people add you as friends, but that you haven't added anyone back yet. I was wondering if you would add me back as a friend so that your posts show up on my friends page. If you don't add people back, then your posts don't show up on their pages.

I would love to be added. I hope you have a great day!
