friends only

I don’t understand why English speaking people have «friends only» journals? There are not «friends only» journals among my Russian friends. Sometimes we have some locked messages due to serious problem (I killed my neighbour because he didn’t lend me money for vodka) or some personal questions (what should I do I am 65 and I pregnant?). Summarizing the people above - Russians don't hide what they write not because they're open, but rather because they're either naive or less concerned about privacy.

Also, Internet usage is still pretty limited in Russia compared to other developed countries. It's used mostly by a limited group of technically advanced enthusiastic people, unlike in the West where almost every household has a high-speed Internet nowadays and it's used daily for different purposes.

I don't have a 'friends only' journal, but I do lock some posts. I don't mind telling the whole world that I went to Cornwall...I do mind if the whole world sees my goddaughter.

i guess that a lot of people around here supposedly fear online predators, trouble at work if an employer sees the blog, etc. i say "supposedly", though, because i have noticed that the vast majority of friends-only journals on lj seem to be used as reasons for these young women to get away with "clique" behavior, and use the "friends-lock" to be exclusionary- you know, they shut people out, then make these melodramatic public posts announcing "friends cuts", or demanding that certain people remove them, because they don't want to be added, etc., etc., etc. most of this, ironically enough, happens with the same young women who write the most desperate-sounding "i need friends" posts in the add-me communities.

it's all a big, silly game with them.

p.s. your post had me laughing so hard! ;)

Yeah, I have a friends only journal because I don't want people from school or my family from knowing what I'm writing. It's just private. I don't like the idea of kids from my school walking around, talking about what's on my journal.

I had some actual death threats from a jackass that I knew not only on Lj, but in real life. I've also had problems with women that have caused me at various times to keep a 'friends only' journal. I hate it because I'd like to think that we are all adult enough to get along, but this obviously isn't always the case, at least not on this side of the pond. I still keep some of my posts locked...
