Song is
Silent Lucidity by Queensryche Elizabeth quieted with everyone else in the audience as the lights went down after the announcer left the stage. The stage was still dark but soft chords of an acoustic guitar started and slowly a light emerged over the singer who’d started the words to the song.
Tony was sitting on a stool, seemingly onstage alone but quietly in the background, Elizabeth could make out the LA orchestral accompaniment. The darkness made it impossible to see anything but him. His voice moved over her and not for the first time, Elizabeth Sheppard admitted to herself that her best friend’s husband had a seductive voice.
The beginning lines came to an end and as Tony stopped playing, he spoke one last line and then all the stage lights came on. It was breathtaking and she looked around noticing the looks on people’s faces. When John had told her how they’d planned on presenting, she didn’t understand exactly how it would be so moving but now...it was beyond inspiring.
Now Elizabeth could see Michelle behind Tony’s left in the first chair with her violin. She scanned the rest of the players noticing a few other people Michelle had introduced her too. She saw Jack near the back playing perfectly as always. As she got to the left side of the stage, Tony’s right, she smiled. She could pick out that hair in a crowd any day.
John Sheppard stood at his friend’s side lightly strumming his electric guitar. Elizabeth hadn’t seen any of the rehearsals. John had wanted it to be a surprise. She was a little confused that he’d not had a bigger role. As the song drifted into a chorus for the first time, she saw her husband sing along with the others. Tony sang alone after the accompaniment and then that’s when she smiled with pride.
John stepped up a little and started his solo while the orchestra supported him, along with voices and sounds from the children’s movie they’d wrote the song for. The lights bathed him in a blue hue and the spinning stars used as visuals were perfectly matched to the lullaby.
When the movie studio had approached the band about a song for a new children’s movie, they’d been apprehensive. They were a rock band. A pretty raucous rock band at times. Eventually Tony agreed and explained to John a story he’d made up for Gabe one night. That had started the ball rolling and the director loved it. It was exactly what he wanted.
Which is what brought her to the grammys, watching her husband and friends perform the lullaby Tony had made up for his son and eventually won an award for.
The build up they made caused her to breath a little heavier and it went back to Tony singing. Still, she could feel everything lifting to a crescendo. Once reached, things slowed down and as Tony sang the last few words, the lights slowly closed in on just he and Michelle as she played along with his guitar, small additions from the orchestra you could no longer see snuck through. But the light eventually closed to where it was at the beginning of the song, with Tony sitting alone on the stool. He lightly played until the the light was completely gone and the only thing carried through the theater were soft cello chords.
Immediately people rose to their feet and the applause was deafening. The theater lights were back on a presentation setting as everyone on stage stood and waved at the crowd. Tony held his guitar in one hand and his wife’s hand in the other. Thousands of people in the theater and millions across the world were watching but the only thing he was focused on was her.
Elizabeth continued clapping as she watched Tony Almeida lean down and kiss his wife thoroughly. It caused her to smile and everyone else to clap harder. She glanced over to the left of the stage and her cheeks became pink. It had taken John no time at all to find her and he was staring right at her, a smirk on his face. He winked as they made their way off the stage and Elizabeth sat back down with everyone else.
The smile never left her face through the rest of the awards show. She knew John loved her and she loved him more than she could ever express but the smile, the smile was for the Almeidas.
