Year 2011. Youth today has lost the discipline Japanese people used to have. They take everything lightly, and don't work as hard as they should. Everywhere you would see teenagers throwing away their lives. They have lost purpose, and have lost respect for adults. Unlike the people who have lived through the wars, youth today has lost sight of what is important.

And so, Battle Royale was made.

~*~

Mirai Shida, the beautiful long-haired class representative of 3-D, watched happily as her classmates played around inside their bus. The class was going on a field trip to Hokkaido. Of course, they were all excited about it.

"They're all so noisy, aren't they?" Ohgo Suzuka, her best friend and the top honor student, whispers so that only she could hear.

"It's fun this way, isn't it~?" Shida grins, looking at her.

Suzuka couldn't help but laugh. "If you say so."

Kamiki Ryunosuke, who was sitting just in front of them, kneeled on his seat to look at them. "Ne, Shida-chan, want some snacks?" He grinned and offered a bag of chips at the two. "It's your favorite flavor."

"Uwah~ You're the best, Mikki!" Shida excitedly took some chips from the bag and gave Suzuka some.

"You went out of the way to buy her this, ne?" You could almost see the smirk on Suzuka's face.

A blush quickly colored his cheeks. "It- it was just because I saw it on the way!"

Suga Kenta, his seatmate on the bus and long-time friend, simply smiled at this and looked around. "Everyone sure is having fun, huh...?" he commented.

"They sure are." Kaho, the girl sitting beside Kenta across the aisle, smiled before glancing at him. "I'm really happy Suga-san agreed to go in this trip. I thought you were busy with your training."

"I thought you were too!" Kenta said. "But as it was, all the club activities were cancelled for this trip. Weird, isn't it? The kendo competition is near."

"Un." She nodded. "I thought it was weird as well. Father told me I could train at home, but I decided to go in this trip instead. It seems like a nice break."

"Staying at home would be better." Narumi Riko, the girl beside Kaho spoke up with a bored voice. "Everyone is noisy and I'm sure Hokkaido would just be a waste of time..."

"Come on, now Riko-chan! Don't be such a pessimist!" Shida exclaimed upon overhearing Riko's words. "It'll be fun!"

"Hmpf." Riko narrowed her eyes and looked outside instead, evidently ignoring Shida.

Suzuka frowned a bit. "Ignore her, Mirai. We'll all have fun, right?"

"Un!" Shida immediately went back to her festive mood.

On the other side of the bus, Kanata Hongo, president of the student council and second top student of the batch, shifted his gaze from watching Shida and the others to the sleeping girl beside him. "Mayu's such a heavy sleeper." he mutters, chuckling a bit as Fukuda Mayuko, his childhood best friend, moaned in her sleep. He playfully pinched her cheeks and said "Such a brat"

"Kana-chan..." Mayuko whispered. "Shut up~"

"Hai, hai." Kanata chuckled some more before leaning his head on hers and closing his eyes as well.

~*~

Shida felt a strange sensation as she opened her eyes. What she saw first was a ceiling. Not the ceiling of the bus, but a familiar ceiling... Looking around, she saw her classmates on the floor. They seemed to be unconscious. They were in some kind of classroom. She sat up and felt something touch her neck. "What...?" Groping at it, she felt a metal brace. It seemed to be an electronic device, as one button on it was emitting a green light.

"Shida-chan..." Kamiki sat up as well, looking dizzy as he clutched his head. "Where are we?"

"I don't know." was all she could answer. A few of her classmates were waking up now as well. Glancing at her other side, she saw Suzuka still unconscious. "Suzu-chan? Wake up!" She gently shook her.

"Mmm..." Suzuka rubbed at her eyes sleepily before sitting up and looking at her. "Wha-" Her eyes widened. "This is..." Obviously panicking, she grabbed Shida's hand and stood up. She looked around the room at all the students then at the board. "Battle..."

The door suddenly opened. A young woman, about 24 years old, went in the room while clapping her hands. She had a huge grin on. "Someone figured it out? Ehhh~ This class seems pretty amazing."

Suzuka visibly frowned. "Toda Erika-san..."

Kamiki's eyes widened as well, and he stood up hastily. "Onee-chan?!" He rushed towards her, but was stopped by several armed men. "Why...?"

By now, all the students were awake. Kenta and Kaho were at one side, watching intently. Kanata and Mayuko were huddled in a corner, with the former trying to calm the latter. Riko was sitting on a chair, curiously watching.

"I will be your teacher for today's class. And since someone already figured it out, let's have a recitation!" Erika looked excitedly around the scared and weirded out faces of the children. "Student Council Vice President, what do you think this is?"

Suzuka's frown deepened as she answered shakily. "Battle Royale. BR Act of 2000 states that the government is entitled to take any high school class using a lottery and place them in an uninhabited island to fight each other until only one lives."

Erika clapped her hands once again as a variety of reactions appeared on the students' faces. "As expected of the top student, naa~" Her smile widened. "That was a good explanation!"

"You've got to be kidding me!" Kamiki tried to break through the guards as he protested. "Onee-chan! Why are we-"

"Oh calm down my dear otouto!" Erika giggled. "You're supposed to call me Sensei today. And as Ohgo-san explained, you were chosen via lottery. It wasn't our fault~" She sat on the table and looked around. "Kids today, you know, they are all so disrespectful. I'm talking in front of you right now but you're all whispering amongst yourselves." She smirked as the buzzing stopped. "You teenagers lack discipline and you don't treat life as important anymore. That's why we, the adults, thought that we could show you a lesson."

"What if we don't want to kill each other?" Kenta stood up and looked straight at Erika. "What if I refuse to fight?"

Erika shrugged. "Then I guess you'll die. You see that neck brace you all have? I can control that. There's a bomb inside it that I can detonate when I want to. Instant death. Neat, right?"

All of the students panicked, trying hard to remove the gadget on their necks.

"No, no, no!" Erika was giggling in glee as she watched them panic. "If you force them to open, you explode! BOOM!" She watched as they stopped trying, and as some students fell on their knees crying.

Kanata, still sitting in the same position, raised his hand and asked "How will we be able to go home?"

"Only one will be able to go home. In the next two days, all of you will fight whether you like it or not. When the two days are over, the bombs will detonate on their own. But if there's only one left by that time, that person will become the Battle Royale winner and will be able to go home." She motioned at one of the armed men, who went outside to get a shelf full of bags. Taking one bag in hand, she opened it and showed the contents. "Each of you will be given a bag. There's a compass here, water and some necessities. There's also a map of the island. It is divided into parts already. Every hour, there will be a danger zone in the island. When you're there, your neck brace will detonate. Oh and of course there is a weapon inside this." She rummaged the bag and found a small gun. "Oooh~ Lucky! This one has a gun! You might actually win with this~!"

There was a long time of silence as the students tried to digest these facts. They were going to fight. Or they were going to die.

"AH!" Everyone stared at Erika who just exclaimed out of the blue. "I forgot something... You have a transferee student~ It's Miura Haruma-kun." She pointed at the guy sitting on the chair at the back. "Hmm. Well then. I'll take attendance. When I call your name, come here and take a bag. Then go outside this classroom and have fun!" She smiled widely as she started calling out their names.

After some 15 or so students were called... "Fukuda!"

A shaky Mayuko tried standing up, but lost the strength of her knees. Kanata readily held on to her arms though, and whispered "It'll be okay. Don't worry."

She weakly nodded and proceeded towards Erika, taking a bag and running away as fast as she could. "Wait for me, okay?" Kanata shouted at her retreating form.

Soon enough, Kanata was called and he quickly took a bag and rushed off, probably to make sure Mayuko was safe.

Just as those two, Kamiki looked at Shida and said "Don't worry, okay? I'll wait for you outside. We'll be safe."

Suzuka looked at the frightened Shida as well and nodded. "We won't let anyone harm you."

"But..." Shida looked around with frightened eyes. "We'll all die..."

Kamiki and Suzuka looked at each other's eyes before looking back at Shida. "You won't die, Mirai." Suzuka said with finality. Kamiki nodded and moved forward as his name was called.

One by one, students were called. Promises of waiting for each other were made. Scared students filed out until no one was left.

"This will be really exciting, wouldn't it?" Erika enthusiastically said to the armed men. They simply nodded expressionlessly. "Wah, boring people!"

~*~

"Onee-chan! Onee-chan!" A fourteen year old Kamiki Ryunosuke went running towards Erika. "Will you stay with us now?" he asked, eyes wide and hopeful.

She placed a hand on his head and said "Ryu-kun, you know I can't. Mom wants me to live with her now that the divorce is final. You have to take care of dad from now on."

A sad look appeared in his eyes. "Why? Why can't we live together..."

"We have to live separately now, okay? But I'll still visit you. I'll be a teacher soon and hopefully, I can teach at your high school." She smiled fondly at him one last time before taking her things and walking away.

"I'll be waiting, nee-chan!"

~*~

Shida ran as fast as she could, trying to get as far from the other students as she could. But just as she was about to enter the forest, an arm grabbed her. "Wah! Let go!"

"Calm down, Shida-chan." It was Kamiki. He pulled her to the side, hiding behind a big bush. "We'll wait for Suzu-chan here and then we'll find a place to go."

"Mi-Mikki?" She let out the breath she never realized she was holding. Her knees gave in, and so she sat beside him.

He smiled a confident smile, the one that tells Shida that no matter what, Kamiki will do his best. "We told you, didn't we? We'll protect you."

She did not know how to respond to that, having all kinds of feelings right now. She was scared, but most of her emotions played on gratitude for her two best friends. They were being exceptionally strong for her. They honestly want to protect her.

Moments later, Kamiki raised his hand and waved it as Suzuka came running towards their direction. "Ah!" She smiled brightly upon spotting them. "You didn't get separated... That's good."

~*~

It was two years ago, he was depressed and had nowhere to go. His father was always at work, and his mother and sister was somewhere he couldn't go to. He was close to giving up life.

"Kamiki-kun...?" But then she came. Shida Mirai. "Come on, you can't cut classes everyday! You won't be able to go up a grade!"

He was lying on his back at the rooftop, letting time pass as he waited for the bell signalling the end of class. "It's none of your business, Ms. Class Rep."

"Eh? But it is!" She frowned and tugged at him to make him face her. "You are going up a grade with us no matter what!" She took his right hand and pulled with all her might. "It's no fun if we aren't all together!"

That day, he refused her help. Even the days after that. But as weeks passed by, he found himself waiting for her to convince him. He was happy with her perseverance. He felt important. He felt like he had a place to go to, finally.

And that was how he saw the light. Through her.

Kenta looked at his bag, and saw that his weapon was a medium sized knife. He nodded in satisfaction, knowing that he could at least use this to make himself a decent enough wooden sword. But his thoughts weren't about killing anyone. No... He was of Samurai lineage. He would not dirty his hands for such a stupid game.

He heard a rustling sound from the side. "Who's there?" he asked, readying his knife just in case it's someone who wants to kill him. He won't kill anyone, but he won't simply give his life away either.

"Kaho." The girl stepped out from the shadows, bowing a bit like how you would in a kendo fight. "I'm sorry to have followed you, but I did not know where to go."

"Are you planning to kill me?" he asked, narrowing his eyes.

"Oh no!" Her eyes widened and she shook her head repeatedly. "You're a great kendo master, someone much better than I am. I would not even dare!" She was sincere with her words. She pulled her bag and opened it to show him the contents. "I only have a flashlight as a weapon, so I could not do any harm."

He nodded and sat down, patting the space beside him. "Then sit down here. If you're not planning to kill me, I don't have any motive to harm you either."

"You won't fight, Suga-san?" she asked as she placed her bag down and sat beside him.

"Will you?" he simply asked, looking right at her eyes.

"Definitely not! It is cowardly to fight people who have not had their proper training. And I did not study martial arts to harm." she answered almost incredulously.

He chuckled. "That's what I think too. We studied to protect, not to harm."

She smiled and nodded. She was happy to have found someone who had the same ideology as she had.

~*~

"Kana-chan..." Mayuko was still shaking when Kanata saw her. "I'm scared. Why are we here?"

He crouched down beside her and held her hand. "I told you, it'll be okay. Don't worry." He took his bag and opened it. "I have a gun. How about you?"

"A stun gun... Would I have to use it?" Her eyes were wide in fear just at the thought of having to use it against any of their classmates. She has always been the type who didn't want to get into fights. She wasn't weak, but she refused to fight anyone. That's why Kanata can't leave her alone.

"Just hold on to it, so you could protect yourself. I'm here, so I'll make sure you wouldn't have to use it." He said, tightening his hold on her hand. "We should hide somewhere safe."

She nodded and gathered her things before following him deeper into the forest. As long as she was with him, she knew she would be safe.

~*~

They first met when they were about six years old. Kanata moved in at the place beside Mayuko's house. She was shy and quiet, but she was mature for her age. You would find yourself entranced by the way she handled herself. He was also mature for his age, and barely spoke. Their parents never thought they could be friends. They said they would never speak to each other.

But somehow, they did become friends. They played, and read books together. He protected her from the bullies, and she patched him up after each fight.

They were inseparable.

~*~

Miura Haruma quickly ran towards the old school building at the side. He was sure there was at least one computer there. It would be good to evade any kind of contact with the students right now. He didn't want to kill anyone unnecessarily.

He simply needs to find a computer, and everything will flow from there.

"Takeru, I'll make sure this will count. I promised you, so this time..."

~*~

"Stop... Riko-chan... please..." Watanabe, their classmate, was stepping back in fear as Riko stepped forward slowly. "We shouldn't do as they say... Let's not kill anyone..."

Riko smirked arrogantly. "If I'm entitled to kill anyone, why wouldn't I? You've all been annoying, you know?" She laughed as she raised her knife. "Goodbye."

"Aaaaaaaah!" He wasn't able to dodge anymore as she charged forward with much force and landed the knife right at his stomach. "Ugh..."

"Heh. This is easy, right? Kill someone, and I live. That's really simple. I can't be a hypocrite like you." she harshly drove the knife deeper, smiling wider as he coughed up blood. When she was sure he was dead, she pulled out her knife and used his sleeves to clean off the blood. "I wonder what you have here..." She took his bag and rummaged around for his weapon. "Eh... An automatic bow huh. Seems useful." She placed it in her bag and stood up. "Hmmm~ I wonder where our precious little class representative is?"
