The Reality Behind the Drama (1/2)
Kamiki/Shida; romance, AU, one-shot
Faced with a chance to appear together in a "realistic" drama, Kamiki Ryunosuke and Shida Mirai find themselves unable to grasp what is real and what is not
A (short and late) gift fic for Cie-chan ^^
"Remember that drama that Kawahima-san was in, with Nishikido-san? Papadoru, was it?"
Shida Mirai sat in front of her manager, listening quietly as she explains the new project she will be working on. "Un, Nishikido-san used his real name..."
"Right!" the manager looked really pleased with this contract. "It's the same format. You're the leading female and you'll use your real name. The writers would ask you for your input so feel free to act like yourself. Oh, but there's a twist"
"Hm?" This took Mirai's attention. Her manager looked so excited to talk about this 'twist',
"Kamiki Ryunosuke-kun will be your leading man, and he'll use his real name too." The manager smiled as if he knew more than he should, as if he knew what Shida was feeling right now. "And! There will be romance in the story, with the two of you. The whole drama is scripted of course. And since this is NTV, they'll borrow videos from Tantei gakuen Q and your interviews to show your growth together. Isn't it great?"
Mirai did not know how to react to that. She has not seen Kamiki in a while. Despite being close, despite being so close she considers him her best friend, she wasn't sure if they could pull off something like this. Acting as themselves and yet acting like they are in a romance drama? How would that work? She was scared of the awkwardness that might ensue. But still, she was a professional and this was her job. It was a great project and she would not back down.
---
The first meeting was pleasant, Kamiki thinks. He was overly excited to see her again and to be able to work with her. She was equally happy to be given this chance. The production staff was happy with their dynamics, and they openly commented that they had real chemistry. It would be easy to make this a good drama, they say.
It turned a bit more serious when the script reading started. The premise of the drama was that after graduation, Kamiki decided to become a photographer instead and leave the showbusiness behind. Being his best friend, Shida would try to convince him to go back and strive to find a drama together. Shida also gets bullied by older actresses and criticized by haters. The drama focuses on these struggles as the two slowly falls in love and realizes that together, they can get through it. The drama ends with Kamiki and Shida getting starring roles in a live action movie of a certain shoujo manga.
"There's already talk that the end might actually happen," The director laughed happily, obviously proud of the project. "We're waiting for the upper management's okay."
"It would be great working with you!" Shida's manager bowed down, followed closely by the others.
---
"It feels pretty real, doesn't it?" Kamiki asked, sighing as he placed the script inside his bag. They were outside, waiting for their respective managers who were still busy talking inside. Sitting on a bench and giving her a can of juice, he continued "Using our name, then the characters are exactly like us too..."
She giggled. "Does that mean you've had a crush on me since... what was in the script? Ah! Tantei Gakuen Q?" She sat beside him, lightly elbowing him. "Ne? So, what's the truth?"
He pouted, looking away. "That's confidential."
"Are~ Are~?" She laughed and peeked at his face. "Is Mikki blushing?" She laughed and patted him on the back. "It's okay, your secret is safe with everyone who would watch the drama. Surely." She laughed some more when he looked at her with the same pout.
"Then, do you think the Shida Mirai character is a bit different from you?" He asked curiously, wondering about all the quiet thoughts the character said in the drama. He was sure he was almost identical to this drama Ryunosuke. How different was she from her drama self?
"We-well," She crossed her arms and looked up, thinking deeply. "I am trying to be more of a girl compared to when we were in high school, and I do care about what other people say... And I like kpop girl groups and One Piece and Tuna and..."
"And you think 'having Kamiki Ryunosuke by my side is a miracle'?" He asked, smiling and reciting from memory. It was exactly what the script said for the last line in the first episode.
A soft blush colored her cheeks. "Maa! Having Mikki as my best friend is quite amazing, I guess." She said, refusing to look at him.
"Don't worry. Your secret is safe with everyone who would watch." Kamiki cheekily replied, imitating her earlier statement.
She narrowed her eyes at him. "Even though you're just Kamiki Ryunosuke!" She proceeded to skillfully poke his side (quite painfully) while laughing.
---
"Good choice, right?" Shida's manager asked the female Amuse agent smoking beside him. "I feel like it'll be a hit."
She laughed. "It will be a hit drama, and probably a premonition to the future. Don't you think?"
He chuckled and threw away his cigarette. "Well, only time will tell."
