Living Together
Tenko x Hana-chan x Junko; AU, friendship, romance
Junko goes back to Tokyo and asks ST Real Estate for an affordable apartment
posted on twitter a while ago but transferring here (and editing to perfection) because I'll post more of this AU soon.
It has been three long years since she last stepped into this office. It felt different and her desk did not look the same anymore. Last she heard, the chief's wife had taken over the secretarial job and the office was livelier than ever. Today, his wife had taken a day off (as he can't say no to her ever). "Excuse me," She called out, wondering where the chief was.
There was a noise of chaos from the back as the chief opened the other door and came out of the inner chamber. "Ah! Junko-chan!" His smile was bright as he motioned for her to sit. "It's been a while!"
She smiled and nodded, sitting on the familiar couches in the middle of the office. "Three years." She said. "I'm sorry I wasn't able to write." She bowed down in respect.
He shook his head, laughing. "I heard from Eiichi-kun! You've been going around places, ne? Good, good! He showed me your pictures!" As if realizing his mistake, his eyes widened and he stood up to get some tea. "Ah, ah, tea... It's been a while since I was left here alone. My wife went to some reunion so I'm a bit out of it."
She laughed at the panic in his movements. She missed working here, really.
"What do I owe this pleasurable visit for?" He asked as he offered the tea. He sat down and smiled that grandpa smile of his.
"I was wondering if you could show me an affordable apartment in the neighborhood. I'm thinking of moving here again." She explained politely.
There was a glimmer in his eyes as he nodded and walked over to his desk. He took out a piece of paper and gave it to her. "Why don't you check the place right now?"
---
She really shouldn't have trusted that old man. He always had stupid plans under his sleeves. The moment she saw the back of that guy's head, she knew she was being set-up. "Um," Her eyes widened when she heard a voice behind her. Damn, she was seen. She looked back and saw his best friend, the ever so popular Tanako Tsutomu, Tenko-chan.
There was gleeful surprise in his eyes when he dropped the box he was holding. "Junko-chan!" Tenko immediately called out to his best friend who was on the second floor. "Hana-chan! Hana-chan! Kakimoto Junko's here!"
She frowned. She didn't really plan to meet anyone else today, especially not him. She has not spoken to him in three years, and all she ever did was send him photos. He was never able to send her letters, given how she changes address all the time. She wasn't sure if she was ready for this meeting. She wasn't sure if she was prepared enough to talk to him face to face.
She had no choice but to look back at him when he ran down though. He looked so excited to see her, eyes lighting up as soon as he confirmed her presence. "Three years..." He said, breathless and eyes wide. "Finally..."
Tenko laughed and moved to his side, patting him on the back. "Won't you two just hug already?" He playfully pushed his best friend to her. "You're both adults now. Come on!"
She laughed at Eiichi's surprised and embarrassed expression and at Tenko's teasing one. "It's been a while." She said, smiling.
Eiichi stared at her, an awed expression replacing his surprised face. "You're... happy." He said, voice just above a whisper. This was the happiest he had seen her, and seeing her so full of life lifts a certain weight on his shoulders. Those three years did something good to her, and he's more than happy to welcome this happier Junko. Waking up from his stupor, he asked "What brings you here?"
She sighed, eyeing the note on her hand with annoyance. "The chief told me to look at this apartment. I'm searching for a place-"
"Ah!" There was a wide grin on Tenko's face when he realized what the old man was thinking. "I told him to search for another tenant!" He looked innocently at the two, as if he was not planning some evil scheme. "You told me, right Hana-chan? You said we should get another boarder with us so our rent would be split into three since there are three rooms, after all." He looked at Eiichi for agreement.
But Eiichi simply raised an eyebrow. "Isn't it common sense to find another university student like us? And Kakimoto-san is-"
"How much is the rent?" She asked, curious of the place. If there were three rooms anyway...
Tenko chuckled and ignored Eiichi's gaping face. He explained to Junko about the rent, and even threw in some very ~good salesmanship~ comments. He knew how much Eiichi wanted to spend time with Junko, and with University getting in the way, this was the best plan he could work out. "So?" He asked after briefly explaining the conditions for the rent. "Interested?"
"Hm," She seemed thoughtful as she looked at the open door on the second floor.
"Want to see inside? It's fully-furnished and it has a nice view!" Tenko pulled at her arm and completely ignored any of Eiichi's protest. "You should really consider it! It's so cheap and you have such nice apartment-mates too, right?" He grinned that famous ~charming best friend of the century~ smile as they walked up towards the apartment.
---
Eiichi has no idea why she agreed to their crazy proposition. He had no idea why she chose to live with them when she had found a stable job that clearly means she could find a better apartment. A side of him theorized it must be because she wanted to be near him too as much as he liked to be close to her, but then another side of him hits him on the head for thinking that. He couldn't let himself think so highly of himself. She probably just wants to save for something.
Tenko obviously enjoyed everything. From the moment Junko brought in her luggage, he had the widest grin on his face. Eiichi was pretty sure he was the happiest about this situation. Tenko was just that type of person who liked these type of things. He definitely would plot more schemes once Junko gets settled in.
"Well then, I'll arrange my things." Junko was emotionless when she went back to her room. She had not shown even just a bit of excitement over living here with Eiichi. He really wanted to read her mind right now.
---
It was their first dinner together. As it was her first night there, Eiichi was unnecessarily nervous. Tenko was unnecessarily excited. While Junko was just being herself. She ordered pizza for the three of them, saying she was the oldest and she had a stable job so it was her duty. They sat on their couch with Tenko in the middle as they watched TV and ate their pizza.
Despite how awkward he thought it would be, it wasn't anything like that at all. Tenko was a chatterbox and Junko replied easily to his comments. With the consistent "Hana-chan, what do you think?" from Tenko, he was also able to join in on the conversation seamlessly. He smiled comfortably as he eased on the couch, finally feeling that tonight won't be so crazy after all.
They ended up falling asleep while watching a late-night romance drama. Both Eiichi and Junko had their heads leaning on Tenko's shoulder while Tenko leaned back on the couch with his mouth gaping open as he slept.
Her first night there was also the first night those three slept on the couch. (And it sure won't be the last time.)
---
For her first morning in the apartment, the first one to wake up was Tenko. He sneakily stood up and let Eiichi slide down to the side and land on Junko's side. He grinned and took his best friend's camera to take a picture of those two. He'll be sure to develop the picture before that guy deletes it!
Tenko quietly moved to their small kitchen to cook up something. He was always in charge of cooking, since he was better than it than Eiichi ever was. The other guy was pretty useless, since he depended on his mother so much when it comes to those things. Tenko grew up with maids serving him, but he made it a point to befriend his maids and make them teach him how to cook. It was his way of getting to know them and making their cold house warmer. Due to that, he was pretty good at household chores despite not needing to do it his entire life. He was thankful that he learned all of that, since it was pretty useful now that he lived on his own (Hana-chan was useless at home, really).
He decided he'll just make a simple breakfast of plain rice, egg and ham. As he was placing down the plates on the table, he heard some rustling from the living room. He looked up to see Junko walking over to him, hands rubbing the sleep off her eyes. "Good morning, Junko-chan!" He greeted enthusiastically.
She nodded sleepily and greeted good morning back. Yawning, she walked to the side and asked "Coffee?"
"Ah, yes please." He grinned as he sat on his usual seat. "What time are you needed in your office, Junko-chan?"
She was stirring their coffee when she answered "8 am. How about you? School?"
"8:30. We study in different universities but Hana-chan walks with me to the train station. Do you have to ride a train too?" He asked as he watched her walk over to the table with their coffees in hand. "Ah thank you." He bowed a bit as he received it.
"I don't have to. I have a bike." She replied, sipping her coffee.
Silence came as they both sipped their coffee in peace. Then, just as Tenko was about to stand up to unplug the rice cooker, Eiichi stood up from the couch and stretched. "Good morning..." He greeted the two as he walked over to them. Then, as if noticing for the first time, his eyes widened. "Did we all sleep on the couch?!"
Tenko grinned and showed a thumbs up. "Yes, sleepyhead. It was like a perfect sleepover!"
"Eh... how embarrassing..." He groaned, sitting in front of Tenko.
Junko simply smiled and stood up to get his coffee. "It was interesting." She commented, giving him his cup. "We should do that again."
He looked at her and smiled as well, gratefully accepting the coffee. "Thanks." He chuckled a bit and added "I missed drinking your coffee."
Tenko wriggled his eyebrows at his best friend, muttering "What a love-love scene~" to himself.
---
Things slowly fell into place as they got used to living together. Every morning, Tenko would cook breakfast and Hana-chan would try to help as much as he can. Junko would make them coffee as they sit down and eat breakfast. Tenko and Hana-chan would walk to the train station together while Junko would ride her bike to work. Sometimes, when he's in the mood, Tenko would make lunchboxes for them three and playfully add little details like film-like omelette or train-like onigiris that would make them smile. Sometimes, when she's in the mood, Junko would call them and ask them if they would want to eat dinner outside. She always treats them dinner when she's in an especially good mood.
During weekends, when the sky is clear, Junko and Hana-chan would ride their bikes to some place and take pictures of trains together. Tenko sometimes accompanied them and would constantly tease Hana-chan about his 'paparazzi pictures' of Junko.
Sometimes, Pika would visit them and liven up their apartment more. He would draw Junko's shots and proudly show the three. Sometimes they played games, or watched movies. They would walk him home and then eat dinner at the Hanabishis who were still staying inside the Kogure Photo Studio. The Hanabishi family enjoyed Tenko and Junko's presence, and would always thank the two for taking care of their oldest son who clearly did not know how to properly take care of himself. They would always tell them "Come back again!" after each dinner.
On rarer times, Tenko would ask the two to come over to his house and camp out. They met his parents once but it was pretty brief. They slept outside the house and talked about how much more fun it is to live together, silently consoling Tenko with their words.
It was a comfortable setting, them living together in one apartment. They enjoyed each other's presence and they had a fun time every day.
Junko did not regret her decision. Staying with those two was like having a new family of her own.
This is the premise of the AU drabbles that might plague this fic comm sooner or later. Just a warning.
