Any time there is a news item in which a perpetrator blames his/her behavior on his/her upbringing (and, as you did, leaving out a physically abusive situation, somewhat), my comment is thus:

"Yeah, my parents divorced when I was eight years old, and I ain't knocked over a liquor store, yet."
