How AU is too AU?

This could be a huge ol' meta question, but what I am actually asking is, if I wrote an XMFC story in a setting so remote that it would absolutely require changing character names, as in all of them, would it throw you out of the story too much? There would be a handy reference guide in the notes

for me, the reason of change matters more, then actual change... I for example, don't read genderbend at all and I'm very wary of racebend. on the other hand, if it's sci-fi or let's say antiutopia where people have letter-number codes instead of names, I'd totally read it. oh, now I'm very curious )))

I also loved that Little Pony fic, you probably heard of, what can I say )))
