How AU is too AU?

This could be a huge ol' meta question, but what I am actually asking is, if I wrote an XMFC story in a setting so remote that it would absolutely require changing character names, as in all of them, would it throw you out of the story too much? for me, the reason of change matters more, then actual change... I for example, don't read genderbend at all and I'm very wary of racebend. on the other hand, if it's sci-fi or let's say antiutopia where people have letter-number codes instead of names, I'd totally read it. oh, now I'm very curious )))

I also loved that Little Pony fic, you probably heard of, what can I say )))
