North Korea, etc.!

It seems like we are living once again in the nuclear age of the 20th century, with North Korea having decided to celebrate the United States' Independence Day (July 4) by testing long-range nuclear missiles, all of which, however, broke up in the Sea of Japan.  This situation is, of course, different than the situation with Iran because the North ( Read more... )

Sorry, but to say that the north korean goverment is "unstable" would be incorrect. however, they are incredibly militaristic with a standing army larger than ours, coupled with a society what practically worships kim jong il. you should see "a state of mind", not about north korean military but rather about their society. outright aggression from the united states would be stupid.

Well, they are not "unstable" insofar that they are ever in danger of losing power. Their government's militaristic style gives it an edge over most styles of government. However, it's unstable in regards as to what it might do on the world-sphere. Yet, if you were the United States, Great Britain, or some other nation of that standing, you would allow it to go completely unchecked? Bringing destroyers near it's coasts would not truly be "agressive" since you would still be in International Waters, but it would ensure that you would have the means to strike at them if it became necessary (perhaps even with small-scale nuclear weapons), unless you think they would go ahead and attack a fleet in International Waters because they considered them a threat? Doing so would cause an international crisis on their part, and it would be interesting to see where nations like China would head if that ever happened...

eh, NK for some reason wants unilateral discussions with the united states, and so far the us seems to want at least china korea and japan involved. all i know is that it's a crisis to begin with, and one must tread lightly to not exacerbate it in any way.

i've always wanted to go to nork korea, too.

If diplomacy via China, South Korea, and Japan can neutralize the situation, than I'm all for it...We'll just have to see how things pan out in the end.

North Korea might be an interesting place to visit. I've heard it's a poverty-stricken nation, but then again, the United States can be- it's just a matter of one's point-of-view. Both North and South Korea would certainly be interesting places to visit, both because their cultures would be fascinating and they are technologically excellent markets (certainly SK is).
