Try MacPorts, formerly DarwinPorts. It's not quite as convenient as Fink, as *everything* needs to be built from source, which takes a long time, and there can be huge dependency webs for even simple things. For instance, PAN2 (a newsreader/downloader client) took 45 minutes to install because of its dependancy web.
However, the software seems to be a lot more up-to-date, and things generally work, unlike with Fink where they break after a while.
I suppose I could try that for the bigger things (i.e., anything dealing with GNOME), leaving the small stuff I already locally installed to manual installation. The main rub was that Fink was just breaking after awhile.
