Why I hate Windows: Anti-virus

Mar 25, 2011 12:12

Does anyone use this anymore? Have all the cool kids gone to Facebook (where I once was, but decided to give it the axe after app-driven poor behavior by family members who'd never act that way in meatspace)? Should I post my question on 4ch... no, I shouldn't. What a terrible place to get actual advice ( Read more... )

shitloads of fuck, computing, sucktastic, software, shitty

Oh yeah... those audio notifications were the very first thing to get turned off. That's the other thing about Avast, too: if I have to keep asking "will this turn off anti-virus and anti-spyware?" when going through all the various types of protection, the software is Doing It Wrong!

I may switch the workbench machine to MSSE and see how it goes, but that machine is not very powerful (Atom).

I use the panda. It does not bother me.

It probably also uses less resources than the typical Windows AV program. ;o)

I use AVG Free and I have no nags. I just set it to do everything automatically and check in on it myself every so often.

I had been using Clamwin, but I didn't want to fuck with anything open source until I was comfortable in Win7. If AVG was irritating me, I'd switch to that.

And yes, I'm still here and still posting!

Luckily for AVG Free, the notification panel only shows up when I go into the interface (to manually update, pause the periodic scan, etc.), so it's not on my shit list like previous versions of AVG (which were VERY resource-intense!)

Hrrmmm... ClamAV... I'll try that on the Parallels VM and see if things improve!

Another vote for Panda. I've switched everything but my laptop over to it -- and that's with AVG only because it's not always tethered TO THE CLOUD.

I use sophos because mom gets it free from the university. It seems rather nice and lightweight and I haven't had issues with it. I think it might normally cost money though.
