Haha... that date auction turned out to be pretty darn embarassing, but I'm not surprised... I kinda knew what I was getting myself into. My friend Rakhee convinced me and a couple of my other law school buddies into auctioning ourselves off to raise money for a local Community Center. Actually, "convinced" is not the word... she pretty said she' ( Read more... )

sometimes I think people are making fun of asians this year on american idol. william hung...the korean girl fook yi something...the korean guy that rapped in korean...and the chinese guy with a accent.
Have you seen "The joy luck club"? I enjoyed movies that came out that had anything to do with asian culture...I waited so long for a movie like Disney's Mulan to come out too. now we've got the super pretty Kristen kruek(1/2 chinese, 1/2 dutch) in smallville that every guy drools over. "The last samurai" is one my most recent faves.

btw, you write pretty good!

I agree that there has been quite a bit of fun poked at Asian Americans, but there doesn't seem to be a clear end in sight. While there have been attempts to give insight into Asian culture, we still haven't been given equal footing in the media... we're still exotic and different from the mainstream audience. Asian girls are objectified/sexualized, while Asian males are not. Is there a particular reason for this dichotomy?

I'm not sure how it goes in the states but here in canada where I live, there's a diversity...and everyone is viewed equally. I'm very proud and happy to be asian no matter what. :) BUT I hear people from the states are racist and rude ( ... )

While I don't think that everyone is overt in their racism, there are just certain perceptions that the general public might have of Asians... like being good in math, science, etc. I agree with you that various ethnic groups pass judgments on the actions of one person of a different ethnicity and generalize it across that ethnic group. However, what I'm really trying to get as is regarding the stereotypes that the Western media, either intentionally or inadvertently, impresses upon the viewing public. My William Hung example is a case and point... while he's shown as a nice guy, he represents and reinforces some of the stereotypes that the general public has of Asian Americans... nerdy, speaks with a different accent, but not really sexy or masculine ( ... )
