Man, that sucks. Is it not required to have car insurance in Australia?

Unfortunately no. It should be compulsory for all drivers to have some form of insurance, but it's not. I think there should be some form of insurance safety net available for young/inexperienced drivers and/or low income earners supplied by the government. Although, I do think if you can afford to own and operate a vehicle, you should also be able to afford insurance for it too.
