Memories
It was their first night spent together. Teddy’s mother wasn’t home. It would be perfect for then to practice Billy’s spells… yes… it would be great if Teddy could stop looking at Billy’s lips.
Billy was silently reading a book, his dark hair against his forehead; he seemed to be enjoying that book… Teddy couldn’t say for sure… but since he joined that group Nathan was gathering… since his eyes fell upon Billy he knew that it was with the dark-haired, shy spell caster that he wanted to stick with.
Although in the first week it was painful to think and accept he was gay, Teddy found it even more painful to be close to Billy and don’t be able to touch him, kiss his lips, or even hold his hand… Teddy’s eyes were always over Billy.
-Is there anything on my face?
-Sorry…?
-You’ve been staring at me since I began reading this book… is anything bothering you?
-No… well… maybe… I’m just tired…
-So… shouldn’t we turn off the lights for today?
-Ah… you can just keep on reading your book… I’ll just go to my room… you know the way don’t you?
-Yeah… I’ll just finish this chapter and get some sleep too… many things on my head.
Teddy couldn’t hear the last sentence; he was already on his way to his room. He opened the window. Greg once told him he was a freak…and now… he knew he fell in love with his best friend… Billy… a member of his team, he felt a real freak… but he knew he couldn’t live without Billy anymore.
The door opened in silence. Billy saw Teddy seated on the window, looking at the dark sky. His clear blue eyes were shining with small tears; Billy had been through tears many times, he could easily notice them.
Why was he crying alone in the dark? He always seemed so strong… telling jokes and smiling to everybody… he was the kind of guy Billy wanted to be…popular, cool, funny, handsome…. Billy blushed when he remembered the first time they saw each other, he could still feel his heart filling with heat. Billy knew it all along that he was gay, at least attracted to other guys; he went through hard times to accept that, but why did he have to fall in love with a partner? Theodore caught all his attention; Billy always hid those feelings behind the curtain of friendship though.
Billy’s heart was beating so fast that moment he didn’t even heard his own voice when he called Teddy and asked him to sit down next to him. And he couldn’t believe when Teddy closed the window and sat.
-C’mon Teddy… what’s up?
-It’s nothing Billy… I’m just… thinking about myself…
-Are you really OK?
-How can a freak be OK?
-You’re not a freak… stop saying things like that…
-How do you call someone who fell in love with his best friend? Although he knows it’ll end their friendship… what would you tell him?
Billy’s eyes suddenly were filled with tears, just like Teddy’s.
-I’d tell him we’re on the same boat… and if he thinks that to be in love with his best friend is to be a freak… well… I’m a freak too… but I love my best friend… I can’t live without him anymore… since the day when I looked into his blue eyes…I love…him…
Teddy reached Billy’s hands and pressed them against his chest.
-Thanks… can I just… sleep by your side? I don’t want to feel lonely…
-You’re not alone anymore Teddy… I’m right here for you… by your side…
-You’re my best friend… did you know…?
-You’re my best friend too… although... I…
-I think... I’m in love with you…
-I know I’m in love with you.
-I’m afraid.
-I’m afraid of it too… but… let’s just stay together... and talk about it tomorrow…
They couldn’t sleep. They wanted to touch each other, to look in the other eye… but were afraid of that.
