Dumb movie stuff

I keep seeing this in movies. Someone takes a hostage, for whatever reason, the hostage gets a weapon, usually a club of some kind, and smacks them with it. Now, here's the bit I don't get. They hit them once then take off. So the bad guy gets up and shoots at them, chases them, whatever. Here's the thing, if they'd hit them and keep hitting them

Call me crazy, but I'm with you. Keep hittin till the stick breaks, then maybe go find a bigger stick.

Actually hit him until the weapon breaks and then take his gun so if by chance he gets up he can't use it against you. Shoot him with body shots until the gun is empty if he does get up.
