I hear you! I think the last time I actually worked on fanfiction was just before the hard drive malfunction two (three?) years ago. I've tried a few times to re-write some the lost fragments, but the spark isn't there.
Good for the sweater progress, and I know exactly what you mean about yarn being lovely to look at, and a PITA to work with! Sometimes the finished product makes it worth the effort, but other times......
Is the shawl pattern written out, or in a chart? I prefer written out, but am able to work with a chart (thanks to all those years of cross stitch embroidery) as long as it's not TOO complex. I recently had to give up on a lacy mitten pattern because somehow the knit-togethers and the cross-overs weren't coming out right....
The shawl is both chart and written. It's not the pattern itself that's the problem, it's just my brain refuses to recognize that it's a pattern, the progression of YO's and K2tog's is not rhythmical.
The other problem is that bamboo yarn and nickel plated needles makes for dropped stitches and a lot of fumbling. It think this yarn just doesn't want to be this shawl. I'll rip and figure out something else.
