and this is really such an old story. as someone who went to a largely jewish yet liberal university, i'd always see people break down the palestine/israeli debate down to ridiculous strawmen and it was so hard to situate myself.
debate about the economic crisis often seems to shape up this way as well and it's frustrating. i've often seen the same between more radical and more mainstream environmentalists. i just wish people would more often recognize and foreground the complexity and conflicting nature of any one stance towards an issue.
yeah anyways, it's nice to see you writing on lj more and getting all philosophical on our asses! i miss you and really want to make it out to moscow soon one of these days!
ps. i might be visiting northern california soon with the folks soon! we'll make sure to talk plenty of trash about you!

After having spent so much time arguing with friends over so many things, it's impossible for me to approach a subject without trying to wring out as many pros/cons as possible. One might come out a little ahead of the other, yeah, but it's a real head-scratcher for me to hear people decry an idea in its ENTIRETY. Some things I don't agree with, too, sure - but how are you ever going to be able to logically rail against something without fully understanding the principles on which people think it might succeed? eh? eehhh?
