Obviously I have no idea of the English meaning of the Chinese, but if you just want a more elegant way of putting the English meanings that you have already, well, "custom handed down from the past" would normally be said as "tradition".

The problem is that Chinese word doesn't only means dissolute or tradition. It have such meanings:
1. dissolute, loose, romantic (basically a Casanova)
2. distinguished and admirable
3. talented in letters and unconventional in life style
4. custom and culture
5. custom handed down from the past
6. demeanor, bearing, charm
7. remarkable (people), truly great and noblehearted (man)
Well it seems I have to combine the 2, 3, 4, 5 meanings together and make it classical and elegant if not poetic.
Seems if I don't give it up, I'll soon be bald...

你好!
My name's André and I'm from Germany. I'm studying Sinology at the Universität Leipzig. I came across your journal on the zhongwen community and thought I might add you. It seems really interesting what problems Chinese people have to translate their own language into English.

I also try to write in Chinese, every now and then. Add me back, if you want. :)
