Yup, that's Japanese transportation for ya. Dad went over there just this past year for a conference, in Kyoto. They had to take one of these trains to get somewhere.
"Why don't we take this one? It's leaving in a minute..." "Oh, we don't want to take this one." "Why not?" *see video above for a good example of what happened* "..." O.o
And so they waited fifteen minutes for the next one, which was nicely empty, so they could have a sane ride to their stop.
If I ever lived in Japan, I'd pick someplace more rural. From what I gather, the cities are all pretty crazy.

And people say they want to live in Japan. Looks like a pretty nice place to me.
I wonder how many people die of suffocation on those trains. O.o
