I can't really imagine Africa without heat and bustle, either. I'd heard that South Africa was surprisingly verdant and cool and Westernized -- "surprisingly" compared with much of the rest of the continent -- but hearing it from you makes it seem more real. :-)

That was my first encounter with Africa, and my least favorite spot. Never saw Cape Town, but Jo'burg felt and often looked like some alternate universe LA. The whole vibe was weird, with high retail inside the mall and intense poverty as close as the parking lot. Everything seemed to be built around racial paranoia. It didn't help my peace of mind that it looked and felt like LA, with the same kind of weather & landscape & spawling suburbia- except the plants weren't quite right and the people were damaged in a subtly different way
