What shall I get, my pretties?

Ok, so, having decided not to go with the flash, expensive car this year, I need to choose something to tide me over from giving back the company car to buying something nice in a year or two.

There's not a lot of criteria, but I'm looking for inspiration/stupid suggestions.

So, the criteria:

• should cost a couple of grand
• 4 (or 5) seats. Real seats

Thats unhelpful. A good late-model X300 XJ8 will set you back somewhere between 1 and 2k, will do in the region of 30mpg on a run and 20 round town, is a dream to drive and will have an equipment and luxury level unlikely to be matched by any other car in the price bracket.

It's certainly far from the worst idea in the world, I shall have a bit of a look around.

You should be able to get a decent focus for that sort of money. Mine has been super reliable for the last 3 years, having no major issues at all in that time. It has 168k on the clock and sailed through it's last MOT this time last year. Next one due soon and it's looking good.

I can recommend BCA in Bedford. Bought 2 cars from there for around £1-2k and both have been great.

An old soft-top Merc. I have a not very old one and it fits all the criteria except the top one. I'm sure that mellows with age.
