Old Friend (三)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jun was reading.
Or at least he had been until a commotion from outside the door attracted his attention. Curiosity getting the better of him, he rose from the table and set his papers down in a neat pile.
The sight that greeted him when he opened the door made him frown. Seeing the messenger Ninomiya hanging over his Satoshi’s back sent a spark of anger up Jun’s spine.
Doesn’t matter if he is an old friend...
Nino froze as he felt a familiar hostile aura coming from behind and turned to look at the taller man.
“Well, well. The mole has finally crawled out of his lair.”
Jun smacked Nino’s head, then pulled him off Satoshi and into a strangle hold.
“When did the mouse get back?”
Satoshi laughed happily at their usual rough antics, thinking they looked very much like brothers. “Just this morning. He’s been restationed here.”
Jun made a face and released his prisoner. “Figures you couldn’t stay away from us.”
The frazzled messenger fixed his short hair and threw a look of distain at Jun. “Nothing as trivial as you would make me come here. I had news for Daimyo Takeda.” Nino, growing bored of the conversation already, started off in the direction of the kitchen.
“Tsk. That little...” Before he could really get started on his rant, Jun let the tan arm that slipped around his waist from behind sooth away his annoyance. “Satoshi, why are we friends with that mousy devil again?”
Just then, Aiba’s exuberant shout of “Nino! You’re back!” echoed from the kitchen followed by a startled yell that belonged to the aforementioned.
“You know we can’t help but love him.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Satoshi was meandering.
The Captain had checked in on his appointed lieutenants in the archery range, offering what pointers he could, and was now heading for the soldiers practicing katana techniques on the other end of the camp. He still thought it was bizarre that anyone at all was listening to him seriously.
Lost in thought, he missed hearing quick footsteps approaching from behind and was nearly tackled to the ground by a body jumping onto his back. Satoshi groaned, “I guess Aiba didn’t poison you with his cooking?”
Nino growled his displeasure in his ear. “I don’t need the mouse jokes from you too.” Climbing off his back, his friend threw an arm over Satoshi’s shoulder instead. “You free?”
“Not really. I’m going to the south clearing to check on the katana unit.”
Nino hummed interestedly and said, “I’ll go with you. I’ve never seen Captain Satoshi at work before.”
They set off across the Takeda grounds again, hearing energetic shouts of men before spotting their source. A larger number of men than yesterday were practicing with wooden bokuto in scattered groups around clearing.
“Wow. They’re all yours?”
Satoshi tilted his head to the side. “You could say that.” Walking towards the nearest group, Nino casually asked him if Aiba had shown Satoshi how to play his new ridiculous game that involved hitting rocks with a stick in order to run around in a circle. However, the Captain wasn’t listening as Nino began to explain the rules.
“Ah-”
Satoshi’s attention had been caught by the dangerous swings off to his right of a certain novice by the name of Sakurai.
“Sorry, better make sure he doesn’t hurt himself,” muttered the Captain, leaving Nino behind to halt the practice before Sakurai could knock himself out with own bokuto.
Although Satoshi had taken to giving Sakurai extra training, for some unknown reason, the man still kept trying to attack with a thrust instead of a slash like he was shown. Naturally, it proved ineffective more often than not.
I can’t figure out why he’s a soldier. He’s much more suited for academic work.
He called for the enthusiastic man to stop so that he could show Sakurai the proper angle to hold the practice sword.
Clearly, Nino was not amused at being ignored and chose to express this by pulling a prank on the Captain.
“Hey Satoshi! I didn’t just come over here to chat with you. I had a message that Takeda-sama wanted to speak with you.”
The older man paused his demonstration to look at Nino. “Now?”
“No, tomorrow,” Nino said with a voice that dripped sarcasm. “Of course now!” The irritated messenger spun around on his heel and stalked off to the main building, not waiting for the other.
Sighing, Satoshi apologized to Sakurai and jogged to catch up. The Captain thought perhaps his friend was a little annoyed at him, but when they entered the main hall just as the handsome Daimyo was walking down a corridor towards them, Nino gave him a broad smile and swung an arm out for him to go first. Thinking nothing of it, Satoshi took the lead, then bowed and greeted their leader. “Takeda-sama, you’re looking well. I heard you wanted...”
There was a two second pause before Satoshi rose from his bow, Takeda-sama smiled widely, and Nino did a double take.
“Ah! Captain Ohno! Perfect timing. I want to ask your opinion. You’ve been together with Matsumoto-san for many years, of course. And well, you see, I’ve met a lovely young woman and...I’m thinking of asking her to stay with me this time...as my wife.” Satoshi missed the astonished look on Nino’s face, instead thought quickly of a reason why the Daimyo shouldn’t get married.
“Ah, maybe you shouldn’t rush into this...”

Author's Note:
*bokuto - wooden practice sword
Enter Nino.
I have nothing in particular to add about this chapter, except that it was fun to write everyone's interactions with Nino. He can be such a lovable little brat.
