This Got Kinda Long

I have a horrible singing voice. It’s one of life’s great tragedies, really. Surely, someone as completely obsessed with music as I am should at least be able to sing along without upsetting the neighborhood cats. Alas… no. Therefore, I will not be singing the praises of Over the Rhine today, but I will tell you my story of how this one band helped ( Read more... )

I shall snag it! It takes me awhile to go through new music, but I'll let you know what I think eventually. ;)

Also, I am jealous of your musical upbringing. I pretty much just got lots of Julio Iglesias and Michael Bolton (my mom controlled the radio).

*hugs* I'm glad you've found what worked for you. I was never a member of any church youth group or Sunday School because I wanted to stay at home with my Mum. When I was confirmed at sixteen, I didn't fit in at my confirmation classes all that much, but I liked the vicars. They were always friendly. :) They played us a song called Outrageous Grace in order to show us how loving God was. :) I do have favourite hymns left over from childhood that I loved singing in church and hope to have some cheerful ones should I ever get married/at my funeral ( ... )

Me, too--and that thing was AWESOME MUSIC ;-) I think music, religious or not, just taps right into that spiritual place inside of us--it's pretty powerful stuff. I do love hymns--those old, wonderful words that people have sung for hundreds or thousands of years out of a need for hope and comfort and thanksgiving and community--gorgeous stuff.

I checked out some Mae at your suggestion--I like it! Do you have any favorite songs I should look out for?

Yay! I would definitely recommend their entire Everglow album, it's really something else! There are so many beautiful songs on there that are stories all on their own.

Also, do you listen to Sufjan Stevens at all? I believe he's a Christian singer and his music just blows you away. Extremely TMI, but the first time I heard his song 'The Predatory Wasp' - which I actually first listened to out of curiosity after Sherlock writer orange_crushed mentioned it on her 'Dangerous Book for Boys' fanfic - I literally ended up on the ground in tears, it was THAT beautiful and the perfect outlet to an extremely stressful time I was going through. My housemates ended up bursting into the room because they thought someone was dying. ^_^; Would recommend, especially if you have more of a spine than I do.

Thanks--I'll give them a heftier listen :-)

Oh, I loooooove Sufjan Stevens! That particular song is one of my absolute favorites. It's so sad and so gorgeous.

I also love this one for sad and lovely (I cry every damn time): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EzeW5KoPUI

And, this is one of my favorites (which is more of a sweet little love song): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OkX_r032PM

Really, I just could sit and give links to every song on Illinois and Seven Swans. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous.

I loved reading your story! Your musical history is pretty much the exact same as mine. Really. The cool parents, MTV (we had to sneak), the pop/country phase, the abandoning it all for church, and coming out of that fog and finding yourself through real, honest, beautiful music. Dude, it was really kind of moving, and I teared up a little. No joke.

You posted about OTR a couple of months ago so I looked them up on Spotify at work. I started with Ohio, but I never did devote enough time and energy to hear it. I'm gonna download this and spend some giant headphone time with them, and get back to you.

Oh, thank you. It was kind of cool to write this story--I didn't really mean to, it just sort of happened as a side-effect of telling how I came to love this band... I wanted to give it context and a background. coming out of that fog and finding yourself through real, honest, beautiful music. <--TRUTH

Let me know what you think once you've given it a listen!
