Using blend modes, color balance, selective color
I use Photoshop CS

This is my base image

01. Duplicate it and set layer to screen - leave it at 100%

02. Duplicate your screen layer and change blend mode to soft light - leave it at 100%

03. Create a new color balance adjustment layer

Midtones
Red +2
Green -13
Blue -12

Shadows
Red -83
Green -25
Blue -58

04. Create a new selective color adjustment layer

Method: Relative

Yellows
Cyan +5
Magenta +28

05. Create a new selective color adjustment layer

Method: Relative

Reds
Cyan -52
Black +10

06. Create another new selective color adjustment layer (you must hate them by now :p)

Method: Relative

Reds
Cyan +1
Magenta -8
Yellow -7
Black -21

Neutrals
Cyan -3
Magenta +5
Yellow -10

07. Create a new color balance adjustment layer

Midtones
Red -69
Blue +50

Shadows
Red -68
Blue +20

08. Create a new single color adjustment layer with #c8c8c8 (a grey color). Change blend mode to color burn and lower the opacity to about 20%

09. I want to make it a little bit lighter. Go back to your screen layer (step 02) and duplicate it. Keep it at screen but change the opacity. 40% looked good for me.

And you're done! Remember to play around with your settings. Every image is different.

Here's my layer palette:
