I owned such an Epiphone a few years ago, and it was fantastic for nice chugging rhythm stuff. It was crap for lead or anything else though, so if someone suggests something more versatile you should check that out too.

Sorry I can't be more help, I only ever play gay acoustic nowadays.

Here's one thing I actually do know about - cheap ass guitars...

Fender

Cyclone - Lovely little guitar, very good for punk / spazz music - light, very simple, easy to flail around with it. Looks cool as fuck too. Slightly on the pricey side though.

Jag (humbuckers) A touch out of your price range, but it pisses over everything else in this list. Plays, looks and sounds like a dream. You'll have to eat noodles for 2 months if you buy this one though.

Epiphone

Les Paul - No-nonsense, cheap, very thick sounding. Heavy as all hell-ass-balls though.

SG - Classic. Lovely low cost guitar. Sounds good, dead easy to play, quite light, looks cool. (Not very punk looking though...)

Super low cost punk rock vibe -

Les Paul Special - Cheap as fuck, manky as fuck, sounds and looks really punk - but it is quite cheap, and it is a little less stable than higher priced ones.

Yamaha Pacifica - The best low cost guitar there is. Plays and stays in tune as well as a £400 guitar, with excellent playability - with a custom humbucker ( ... )

the other half says thusly...

"i have an epiphone LP from the mid-late 90s
» nice sound
» good value for money if theyre the same quality they were 10 years ago
» obv he should consider the various fenders that come into his price range. i honestly think my highway1 strat is superior to the american standard strat and it might just make it into his price bracket if he finds a good deal
» it sounds like he's looking for a versitile guitar, he wont find better than a fender strat for that, but theres a good chance he already has like a fender squier or something
» yadda yadda
» what he really wants to do is get himself to sound control or similar with an idea of what he wants, and to have a play through what they have
» if hes in edinburgh cash converters had a lovely black epiphone LP in it last few times i was in, for something around 250 i think"

» i heard really good things about aria's les pauls
» theyre considered extremely cheapgoodvalue, but ive never played one so cant comment. but if he has the option of trying one out i would :)

» then cash convertors on the walk is somewhere he wants to check out
» and ive had excellent experiences with sound control in edinburgh, ask for simon if he's still there
» scayles is alright too
» if you demonstrate that you know what youre doing they basically give you whatever you want to try and leave you alone

(i learned from the past and saved this one until i knew he'd stopped talking)

Cheers! All good points. I wouldn't want to buy without trying first. We are lucky we have a half-decent Sound Control in Edinburgh. I'm not a massive fan of Fenders. I have a very poor quality Tele squire.

I hadn't thought of Aria. Leanne has an Aria bass which is pretty good. I'll maybe look at that.

I'd go for a Yamaha Pacifica, apparently they're way better than there £200-ish price tag suggests. However, I haven't actually used one and I assume you're gonna want to record with it. The Epiphone I've got sounds ok aslong as some idiot doesn't through it on the ground! The sound we got when recording it was ok, although I think it fedback too easily, but that's the cheaper pick-ups in it. What about a Schecter? You can get them from around £400 and the look bitchin', either an S Series or a Tempest Series. Soundcontrol do them so you can try them out there and then buy them cheaper from the web!
