Reading this, I wonder if there's a case to change 'racially aggravated crime' to 'xenophobically aggravated crime', whereby any crime motivated by a someone's difference from the 'norm' of society is heightened in it's severity. It would definitely step up the number of people prosecuted anyway!

Strangely, I took this whole case very personally when it appeared in the press. Usually I cringe when people live out media tragedies vicariously, but maybe this just hit closer to home. Also, speaking about the media, it's odd how the BBC's report seems to have different names, number of defendants and sentences to the Guardian - well, what do the media set care? It's only a couple of goths, eh?

I read things like this, and then it makes me hate Julie Burchill and her "chavs are the salt of the earth" diabtribes even more, if that's possible.
