the long way home [for changehistory]

A month. It had been nearly a month ever since Peter decided to take Adam away from all of the nonsense. It did good for them, seeing how it gave them a clear open view of the future and what could come out of it if the two really thought about it. Before they left, Peter had already devoted himself entirely to the immortal. There was no more agony ( Read more... )

Adam had needed the break. A month had been just the start, really, but he hadn't given himself a chance to stop since it had all gone wrong at Odessa. Time in a coffin did not count. He couldn't stop, really, couldn't think, because if he did, he was fairly certain he'd go mad, but then the not stopping...things started to unravel anyway.

Time to stop, then, had been good, especially not alone. If he'd spent some of it brooding, he'd tried to not spend too much of it doing so. Tried to remember what normal people did on vacations, doing normal things. It was odd what you forgot after thirty years, and odd what you remembered. It was good to be outside, at least.

He came into the room, and found Peter staring off into space. Head tilting, hoping nothing was wrong, he arched an eyebrow. "I hope your mind is wandering toward pleasant things...?"

"Just thinking about home," Peter said, his tone soft but he didn't try to hide the meaning for why he was thinking such a thing. It was almost about time for Peter to bring it up, having spent all of this time listening to Adam and doing whatever Adam wanted.

"More or less about what's going on over there. I've been thinking about calling Nate, see if I could get maybe a little heads up but I don't think I should resort to phone calls since I'm sure he wouldn't mind if we just...popped right back home. Where we belong?"

Adam wasn't sure either of them necessarily belonged there. It wasn't Peter's timeline, and he was barely welcome there by anyone, anyway, save Marissa. But he'd promised her, at least, that he'd come back, and after thinking her dead for three and a half centuries, he wasn't keen on just walking away for good.

"I see," he said with a bit of a sigh, sinking down into a chair by the window.

"I did promise to go when you said you were ready," Peter reminded, biting his lower lip in thought. He didn't want to sound pushy, but at the same time he didn't want his worry to go unnoticed either. How could he be firm and at the same time try and be reasonable with Adam's wishes? Peter watched Adam, trying to figure out what he was thinking without doing so literally, no need to be verbally bitch slapped for doing something he wasn't supposed to.
