That is very sweet and so very hard to deal with at the same time. My step-father's mother, (Bayla is her Yiddish name) had dementia for years to the point where she had to be put in a home, because she became unsafe. She lived through untreated pneumonia (they had a very strict, comfort treatment only, type plan in place)and was just completely not there from the stupid, well it was probably full blown alzheimers by that time. And I keep getting mad about how little we know about all this. Have you read the latest about how it might be another form of diabetes? There goes the standard American diet screwing everyone again. Also I've heard it blamed on all the hormone drugs they use to throw at menopausal women

And the ipad is a great idea. If he can stand the light which can irriate some people, but there is a program that takes the blue (I think?) light out of electronics. It is mostly for people who don't want technology to mess with their arcadian rhythm. There are great puzzle and memory games that can really help with keeping the mind fresh and active. It is a muscle that needs to be exercised like everything else. My father was always trying to get my grandma to do them but she is unmotivated. Even just checking email like receiving pictures but not replying or learning how to navigate a kindle book with all the fancy table of contents links and dictionary look ups keeps the brain active from learning new things.
