ooh, is said book linguisticsy? there's an excellent book on the cross-cultural (European) sociolinguistics of swearing called "Your Mother's Tongue". it was one of the first linguistics books i ever read...

yes, linguisticsy, i s'pose. it's got a chapter on the cross-cultural meanings/implications of swearing too, and just general stuff.
go, read.
