Is the word 'cryptic' more positive or negative, good or bad?

would be context sensitive.. but I guess it would have more of a negative connotation than positive by default cos it sort of implies something being hidden unnecessarily.

IMO, definitely negative more than positive except when referring to crosswords, where cryptic means "oh joy!".
