Reading "The Undomestic Goddess" by Sophia Kinsella. Current movie is Emma. I have several movies and books from the library to view and read. I picked up "Be the Pack Leader: Use Cesar's Way to Transform Your Dog . . . and Your Life" by Cesar Milan as we are considering getting another dog at some point in the future. I haven't started the book, yet, but I've seen him on TV doing his thing and think it will be interesting to see what all he has to say.

I have heard some iffy things about Cesar's methods, primarily the alpha roll. There are concerns about it being too violent, and not what is considered an alpha roll at all. I just tried a quick google to find what I had read earlier, but studies of wolf packs now show that it's not an alpha roll at all but something else... I can't remember.

I haven't started the book, yet. I think I know what you are talking about. In the wild, young wolves show submission to the pack leader by laying on their back/baring their belly. The alpha wolf doesn't force the behavior and I think that's why the so-called "alpha roll" is questionable. It forces the behavior onto a dog.

The mistake is in the thinking of humans to believe we are the ones making the decisions regarding the dog. The reality is that a dog often chooses who s/he will follow.

Very true, and profound to boot! I think that applies to lots of things in the world, too.
