A photo from the weekend... This is a departure from my usual macro stuff. I experimented with zooming out as I pressed the shutter on a handful of images, and this was my favorite one.

This is what my eyesight is like after 16 straight hours in front of Adobe After Effects. Skeery.

Looking at that again, the "painterly" effect of the motion blur is really cool. Was this handheld?

Hi Mel! Thanks, It was handheld, which is kinda tough. I'd like to try more of these with a tripod (didn't have it with me at the time). Honestly, I was inspired to do this because the background had some distracting suburban remnants (street sign post, power line), but I liked the color and light and wanted to convey that.

Actually, I think it probably turned out cooler because it was handheld! The subtle curviness of the streaks (most noticeable in the white highlights) gives it a more natural look that I think would probably get lost if it were a tripod shot (otherwise it might look like you ran the photo through Photoshop's Radial Zoom filter :))

Ha! I thought of that. These days with the preponderance of cheezy lens flares and drop shadows out there in the world, I always feel like I need to put a big sign on my stuff, saying "No this is not a Photshop effect!"

Oh, thanks for the comment on the avatar too. Sophie was still a puppy when that was taken, but in my totally biased opinion I think she's still the cutest pug ever.
