Apartment Advice, Please!

So I'm living in this house with a roommate that I really don't like, and a crazy landlady. I love the house. Love it. I like the neighbourhood a lot, too. The rent is excellent. But I *really* can't stand my roommate. He's a dirty wanna be mountain man. He hasn't mastered the art of flushing the toilet and making sure everything has gone ( Read more... )

We went to the Caribbean - Jamaica, Cozumel, and a private island in the Bahamas. We were supposed to see the Caymans as well, but alas, the waves were too big and so they couldn't use the little boats. I'll write more about it next time. :)

How often do you entertain people these days? How often do you plan on entertaining people in the future?
You should probably go for the apartment, especially if the utilities are included in the price (great for laundry and constant computer use).

Never. Seriously, I had a friend over yesterday, as she was in town for a visit (she's doing a degree in Belfast), and it was the first time I've had anyone over since September. But I would hope that I will have people round more frequently than that in the future!

Sounds like you've made your mind up already, Sarah!
Go for the new apartment. If it's as good as you've described, it should be yours!

If you choose to leave the lease early, but you can find someone to take your place, do you still forfeit your deposit? Hope not!
Get the new place now, and start looking for property to buy.

Good luck!

You're too right. And unfortunately, landlords here will seize any excuse to keep the security deposit, and if you break a lease, you're lucky if they only keep the deposit. I don't think I'm quite at the point in my life where I'm ready to look for property to buy - I have no intention of staying in Atlanta for one minute longer than necessary.

I would say it's down to two things: 1) do you want to commit to Atlanta for 12 months? and 2) are you happy when you go home now, or do you dread it? I too traded in a cheap, central flat for a more expensive further out one, but it was WELL worth it because I no longer dreaded going home.

Good luck!

1) Ye gods, no. But I don't think there's much of an option. I can't quit my job for at least 6 months, and if I'm going to go to nursing school, the most sensible option is to settle in somewhere and get the prereqs done. And as my friend pointed out yesterday, it's hard to find a lease shorter than 6 months, so if I have to sign a 12 month lease, I should sign it as soon as possible and get the clock ticking. 2) Not happy - I do dread it. This morning I got up and my roommate was in the kitchen, so I waited in my room for 10 minutes in the hopes that he would go the hell away. This really drove home the fact (once again) that I need my own place.

Having your own apartment is totally worth it. I was in a similar situation when I moved down here at first - gorgeous room with own bathroom and porch, a block from the beach, reasonable rent, etc - but I couldn't stand my landlady, who also lived in the building. When I first found my apartment I basically moved in right away and had no furniture or anything but it was so worth not having to deal with people I hated.

What is it with crazy, present landladies?? Why won't they just go the hell away? But good call on not dealing with people you hate.
